OSU Extension adds two Falls City group
New small farms and dairy specialist to serve Polk County

POLK COUNTY — The
OSU Extension program is
welcoming two new em-
ployees who will work with
Polk County growers to pro-
vide resources.
Javier Fernandez-Sal-
vador joined the small
farms program as an assis-
tant professor of practice in
May.
“My main focus is to
work with small farms in
sustainable systems, organ-
ic agriculture, pastures,
berries and specialty
grains,” Fernandez-Sal-
vador said.
He may be based in
Salem, but Fernandez-Sal-
vador is in the beginning
stages of reaching out to
Polk County growers.
“The first year, I want to
meet the stakeholders and
prepare a needs assessment
for the region,” he said. “I
want to get to know the
community. I’ve lived in
Corvallis and all around
Oregon for the last 15 years.
I’m very familiar with grow-
ing in the Willamette Valley.
I want to establish relation-
ships with the farmers. After
that, we’ll be looking at
what research projects we
can do and get some practi-
cal outcomes for small
farmers.”

tending Oregon State Uni-
versity and working in the
area an attractive package.
Now he hopes to help
farmers find sustainability
in a couple different ways.
“The first is economic
sustainability — to make
sure that farmers are able to
pay the bills at the end of
the month,” he said. “We
want to make small farms
profitable. Second, we want
sustainable environmental
impacts — to leave the soil,
air and water better than we
found it. Then three, there’s
a human component of
sustainability — to be able
to show the farmer that they
can start a small business,
like it and have a good rela-
tionship with workers,
stakeholders and customers
buying their products.
Those are the main three
components.”

Extension Dairy Manage-
ment faculty member — a
new resource for Polk
County.
Cruickshank, an Oregon
native, saw her studies and
work take her to Wisconsin
and California, but has re-
turned to Oregon to focus
on dairy management prac-
tices.
FALLS CITY — Falls City’s
Emergency Preparedness
Group is looking for new
members to help with out-
reach to more citizens.
The informal group has
m e m b e r s re p re s e n t i n g
churches, the school dis-
trict, businesses and the
city.
Group coordinator Jenn
Drill, who is also a city
councilor, said there are
smaller organizations,
such as the garden club,
that she would like to see
included.

get together every month
“I will be providing re-
search-based programs to
help dairy producers make
informed decisions about
their operations,” Cruick-
shank said. “Initially, that
will be lots of listening to
understand the needs of
producers.”
Cruickshank is no
stranger to Oregon and is
excited for the chance to
make a difference quickly.
“I’d like to have visited all
the dairies in the Willamette
Valley by the first year,” she
said. “I hope to start to ad-
dress at least one of the high
priority needs by providing
tools and guidance to pro-
ducers.”

cluding alternate plans if
the bridges in town were to
fail in an earthquake.
“The goal of the group is
to inform as many mem-
bers of the community as
possible and encourage
them to prepare,” Drill
said.
