Parents question dual role
By Emily Mentzer
The Itemizer-Observer
INDEPENDENCE — The
Central School District
Board Chair Steve Love said
that the board spent hours
in executive session prior to
deciding to allow Superin-
tendent Buzz Brazeau to
serve as interim principal at
Central High for the 2016-17
school year.
“In listening to the public
comments tonight, it feels
like, clearly, the discussion
and decision process and
understanding hasn’t been
communicated,” said board
member Donn Wahl.
The discussion came after
two members of the public,
both parents of children in
CSD, expressed concerns
over Brazeau filling the shoes
of both superintendent and
high school principal.
“Every time that we have
these big, long discussions,
it’s a communication thing
that we’re dealing with,”
board member Steve Moser
said. “People aren’t totally
informed, and we need to be
able to do that better.”
Parents Barbara Harriman
and Mike Mann both cited
concerns over Brazeau’s
ability to effectively sooth
the issues and stress at the
high school while looking at
the district as a whole.
Mann said if the district
does not address his con-
cerns quickly, he would “ab-
solutely oppose any bond.”
Central Education Associ-
ation representative Laura
Waight was present at the
meeting. In an email after
the meeting, she said she
and the association mem-
bership were curious as to
how the board will address
these parents’ concerns, but
that the union’s overall stand
on Brazeau’s appointment
as principal has not changed
since the announcement
was made in spring.
“We hope that they (the
board) will be forthcoming
with their vision for how this
will work over the course of
the next year,” Waight said.
Deputy: Grand jury date unknown
Continued from Page 1A
“That’s the kind of evi-
dence that would come be-
fore a grand jury,” he said.
“That’s a key piece of evi-
dence that the grand jury
needs to hear. I’m not pre-
pared to comment on evi-
dence.”
Felton will schedule a re-
view by the polk county
grand jury, but did not
know the exact timeline at
press time.
“We are entering witness-
es, conducting a normal
fact-finding process to get
the best possible picture of
what happened at the
scene,” Felton said.
Whether or not drugs or
alcohol were involved is not
known yet, Felton said. An
autopsy has been done, but
results from the toxicology
screening were not available
as of press time.
The last time a deputy-in-
volved shooting occurred in
Polk County was in the early
1970s, said Sheriff Mark Gar-
ton. Police officer-involved
shootings in Dallas and In-
dependence took place in
the early to mid-1990s.
Gibson is on paid admin-
istrative leave during the in-
vestigation, Garton said.
“I can’t comment on an
ongoing investigation, except
to say that it is a tragic situa-
tion for all involved,” he said.
Po l k Co u n t y ’s m a j o r
crimes team was contacted,
per officer-involved shoot-
ing protocol, and OSP was
designated as the lead
agency in the investigation,
which is ongoing.
Agencies who assisted on
scene were Salem Fire, Falck
Ambulance, Polk County
District Attorney’s Office, In-
dependence Police Depart-
ment and Monmouth Police
Department.
