SOUNDS OF SUMMER
Dallas’ Rotary Stage sets the scene for cool beats during warm summer evenings
By Jolene Guzman
The Itemizer-Observer
DALLAS — If summer-
time makes you crave hear-
ing live music outside, Dal-
las’ Sounds of Summer has
the cure.
The free Thursday
evening series kicks off at
the Rotary Stage downtown
on July 14 with a lineup in-
cluding a variety of music,
from country to heavy rock
and Western swing to blues.
“I really like this year, the
amount of different types of
music we’re bringing in,”
said Chelsea Metcalfe, the
executive director of series
organizer Dallas Area Visi-
tors Center. “Anyone in town
of any age can find some-
thing. They are all really
good.”
Launching Sounds of
Summer is the increasingly
popular Western swing band
Oregon Valley Boys. Metcalfe
said the group has been part
of the lineup for a few years
running.
“The group is fantastic
and the crowd loves it,” she
said.
Long-time favorites Joe
Shinkle & 99W and Johnny
Limbo & the Lugnuts are re-
turning, but that pretty
much goes without saying.
“There’s always the bands
the community loves,” Met-
calfe said. “Those are the two
regular bands we are proud
to bring back every year.”

The Oregon Valley Boys, a Western swing band, will perform on July 14 in the first show
scheduled of the Sounds of Summer at the Rotary Stage in Dallas.
This summer’s schedule
includes one newcomer,
Stolen Rose, at the request of
the 20- to 40-something
crowd.
Stolen Rose is a rock band
with style that compares to
The Black Keys and the Ala-
bama Shakes.
Lead guitarist Nathan
Me ye r s o f t e n p l a y s a t
Pressed Coffee & Wine Bar in
Dallas and has lobbied to
play the series for the last
few years.
That combined with re-
quests from residents to see
an edgier rock band pushed
Metcalfe to put Stolen Rose
in the lineup.
“It’s a new sound that we
haven’t had at Sounds of
Summer,” Metcalfe said.
July 28, Summerfest week,
is still to be announced, but
Metcalfe is hoping to book a
band to go with the festival’s
theme of “Hawaiian Luau.”
Whatever act ends up fill-
ing that slot, it will be per-
forming on the Summerfest
main stage on the Polk
County Courthouse lawn.
Food will be available
each week, provided by a
local food cart vendor. So far
the schedule includes Black-
rock BBQ and El Pique.
