Richards to travel Iberian
Locals graduate from
Peninsula in search of ‘place’ Oregon State University
Perrydale social studies teacher will bring back lessons
By Jolene Guzman
The Itemizer-Observer
PERRYDALE — What
makes a “place” more than
just a point on a map, but a
community?
That is one of the con-
cepts Perrydale social stud-
ies teacher Tabitha Richards
will be studying on a 17-day
trip to the Iberian Peninsula
this summer.
She is one of 14 teachers
selected for the trip, which
will allow them to explore
the geography of the south-
ern Iberian Peninsula from
Lisbon to Madrid.
The application
process was competitive
and open to all teachers
in Oregon.
Those selected teach dis-
ciplines spanning a variety
of subjects and grade lev-
els.
Richards said the goal of
the trip is to use the knowl-
edge gained to bring les-
sons back to Oregon.
“You want to make it so
that everything you pick
up, you can bring back
and teach to our stu-
dents,” she said. “You can
spread geography over any
content area — science,
English, math — and at
any age.”
The trip, which begins
July 6, is coordinated
through the Center for Ge-
ography Education in Ore-
gon and sponsored by the
Gray Family Foundation,
which has the mission of
providing international
travel experience for K-12
teachers.
Two college professors
will be leading the trip.
Both are coordinators
with the center for geogra-
phy.
Richards said the trip will
allow teachers a chance to
explore the area’s physical
geography, climate and
“human geography.”
The latter examines why
humans build towns where
they do, looking at not only
location, transportation
routes and available re-
sources, but the sense of
“place.”
“Geographically speak-
ing, location is latitude, lon-
gitude, but place is what
makes us Perrydale, what
makes us Dallas … why is
that place so important to
people,” Richards said.
Richards went on a simi-
lar trip two summers ago,
traveling to Civil War battle-
fields.
She said seeing those
places enriched her teach-
ing about the time period
and battles.
“You can read that in a
b o o k s o m e w h e re, b u t
once you walk across the
land that you are dis-
cussing its easier (to
teach),” she said.
Next year Richards is
teaching a college credit ge-
ography class where she will
incorporate lessons learned
in Portugal and Spain, and
may teach a social studies
course simply on the geog-
raphy of the Iberian Penin-
sula.
A history buff, Richards is
looking forward to learning
more about the region’s his-
tory and how it relates to
modern culture.
The Iberian Peninsula is
where Muslims, Christians
and Jews lived together fair-
ly peacefully for centuries
under Moorish rule.
The culture of the Moors
had an influence on the
language and mathematics
we use now.
“All of that architecture is
still left, all that human ge-
ography and history is still
there, and it’s really impor-
tant to our math and our
language,” she said.
Another highlight of the
journey is seeing the origi-
nal map Christopher
Columbus used.
Though it isn’t strictly
e d u c a t i o n a l , R i c h a rd s
said she’s eagerly awaiting
another kind of experi-
ence.
“I’m really looking for-
ward to the food, too,” she
said, laughing.
