Bomb squad disposes of mortar
By Emily Mentzer
The Itemizer-Observer
INDEPENDENCE — An
Independence family called
police Sunday when they
found what appeared to be
an explosive in a family
member’s residence, Sgt.
Tino Banuelos said.
“They had no idea exactly
what it was,” Banuelos said.
“ They were concer ned
enough to give us a call just
to be sure. It started to look
like a grenade to them.”
Banuelos said he took
many photos of the device
and sent them to the Salem
Bomb Squad, who respond-
ed.
The Oregon National
Guard Explosive Ordnance
Disposal Unit also respond-
ed out of Portland.
What looked like a
pineapple-style grenade
turned out to be a World War
II Japanese type 89 high ex-
plosive mortar, Banuelos
said.
“It’s 2-and-a-half inches in
diameter, and about five-
and-a-half inches tall, noth-
ing extraordinary about it,”
Banuelos said. “The concern
was if it was a live mortar,
the acid inside could, over
time, eat through, and the
chemicals, rather than be-
coming less explosive, crys-
talize and become more ex-
plosive.”
Initial scans showed the
main charge had been re-
moved from the mortar, but
it was uncertain whether or
not the fuse was intact,
Banuelos said.
The mortar was taken by
the explosive ordnance dis-
posal unit to be disposed of,
Banuelos said.
“We would much rather
spend the hours investigat-
ing the device than an injury
or death call because of
something like this,” he
said. “We appreciate how
quickly the EOD unit re-
sponded to make sure it was
done in the safest manner
possible.”

Carson “Kit” Newton Culbertson 84,
of Corvallis, passed away at home on May
1, 2016.
He was born September 11, 1931 at
home in Hale, Missouri to parents Olen
Ray Culbertson and Ina Lodge (Newton)
Culbertson. On May 1, 2016, as he
crossed the trestle, spanning Jordan’s
swelling tide, he beheld the Union Depot,
into which his train would glide: there he
met the superintend, God the Father, and God the Son, and
with a hearty, joyous welcome, weary pilgrim welcome home.
He joined two older brothers, and two more followed.
Robert LeRoy Culbertson, James Edwin Culbertson, Ted Hu-
bert Culbertson, and Ross Granville Culbertson. He lived
with the family in Carroll County, Missouri until they moved
to Oregon in 1943, in the middle of World War II. They set-
tled in the small town of Buena Vista and lived there until
adulthood. He attended Pennsion Elementary, Grace Elemen-
tary, and Blew Elementary, all one room schools in Missouri.
He also attended Buena Vista Elementary School and the Ore-
gon School for the Deaf in Salem. He graduated from the
eighth grade in Buena Vista and attended Independence and
Central High Schools.
Carson married Mary Jane Linville on June 28, 1956 in the
Independence United Methodist Church. To this union two
daughters were born; Anna Nadine Culbertson in 1958 and
Patti Rae Culbertson in 1960.
He was employed and retired from the Southern Pacific
Railroad working in the “Maintenance of the Ways Depart-
ment.” He was a member of The New Hope Center Pente-
costal Church of God in Corvallis. Carson and Mary had
made their home in Corvallis for more than 40 years.
Carson lived for his family, they were the center of his life.
He loved woodworking and gardening; raising some of the
most beautiful flowers around. His yard was always a mas-
terpiece. He was a friend to everyone, always ready to lend
a helping hand to those in need. He was a great father,
brother, and friend. He was the gentlest man to all his family
and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary in
2009; granddaughters Jessica Jane and Anna Christine Volkers
in 2015; sister Trula Faye Culbertson in 1939; and brothers
Trenath Culbertson in 1939 and Robert LeRoy Culbertson in
2003.
Carson is survived by daughters Anna Nadine Abraham of
Halsey and Patti Rae Thompson of Corvallis; brothers James
Edwin Culbertson of Fontana, California, Ted H. Culbertson
of Pendleton, and Ross Granville Culbertson of Saucier, Mis-
sissippi; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
and great-great-grandchildren.
