Talks on Tuesday
The Monmouth-Inde-
pendence Chamber of
Commerce will hold PEP
Talks: Promoting with a Pur-
pose on Paper on Tuesday
from noon to 1:30 p.m. The
talk will be held at Henry
Hill Education Support
Center, 750 S. Fifth St., Inde-
pendence.
Topics will include learn-
ing about top marketing
tools, review free/low cost
tools and understanding the
do’s and don’ts when pro-
moting your business or or-
ganization on paper such as
brochures, rack cards and
flyers.
Pre-registration is re-
quired by Monday. Cost is
$15 for chamber members
and $20 for nonmembers.
Cancelations must be re-
ceived by noon on Monday
or the fee will be charged.

Dallas Yoga and
Balance offers PiYo
Dallas Yoga and Balance
Studio, 115 SE Court St.,
Dallas, will offer PiYo each
Tuesday and Thursday
throughout the month of
May.
There is no cost to attend.
PiYo is a music-driven
workout inspired by the
practices of pilates and
yoga. The class includes
strength and flexibility train-
ing, conditioning and dy-
namic movement. Students
who attend classes regularly
can gain benefits including
improved strength, flexibili-
ty, balance, stress reduction
and overall fitness level im-
provement.
Classes will run from 5:30
to 6:30 a.m.

Guthrie Park hosts
square dance
Guthrie Park Community
Center will host its second-
Saturday old-time square
dance from 7 to 10 p.m. on
Saturday at the center, 4320
Kings Valley Highway.
The dance is open to all.
Live music will be by Cash &
Company.
The dance will be the last
of the season. Dances will
resume in September.
Cost is $5 per person or
$15 for a family of four or
more. Children 12 and
younger are free.

Western Oregon University displayed flags on campus in honor of Holocaust Remem-
brance Day on May 4. Each flag represented 500 people killed. There were 27,660 flags
planted.

New exhibit arrives
at Kunke studio
The Tom Kunke Art Studio
and Gallery, 357 Main St.,
Dallas, will host a new ex-
hibit through June 25.
Artist Therese Misner will
display her “White Sky” se-
ries.
“These pieces all have a
rustic feel and are inspired
by old objects and old build-
ings around the farm,” Mis-

Dance School to
perform Tuesday
Stamp Out Hunger
set for Saturday
The Polk County France
School of Dance will hold its
semiannual dance perform-
ance Tuesday at 6 p.m. at
Talmadge Middle School, 51
16th St., Independence.
Admission is three cans of
food or $3 donation per per-
son. All food will benefit the
Dallas Food Bank. Cash do-
nations will benefit Joan
Schmitt’s children’s fund.
Students will perform tap,
ballet, jazz and hip-hop
numbers.
New classes begin on
June 7.
The Marion-Polk Food
Share and letter carriers in-
vite the public to take part
in Stamp Out Hunger on
Saturday.
To participate, collect
nonperishable food items
and leave them in a bag near
your mailbox on Saturday. A
letter carrier or volunteer
will pick up the donation.
All donated food stays in
the community where it was
collected. More than 95,000
pounds of food were collect-
ed in Marion and Polk coun-
ties in 2015.
Among the most “want-
ed” foods include shelf-sta-
ble milk, high protein foods
(canned meats, canned or
dry beans, etc.), canned
fruits and vegetables, whole-
grain items, soups and 100
percent vegetable or fruit
juice.
Donations can also be
taken to any post office
through May 18. Dallas Post
Office is not participating.
Local law officers
to graduate basic
Three local law enforce-
ment officers will be part of
the 356th Basic Police Class
graduates.
The class is a 16-week se-
ries by the Oregon Depart-
ment of Public Safety Stan-
dards and Training and in-
cludes topics such as sur-
vival skills, firearms, emer-
gency vehicle operations,
ethics, cultural diversity and
more.
Local officers who will
graduate are Officer Alaster
Graham (Monmouth Police
Department), Deputy Sheriff
Michael Smith (Polk County
Sheriff’s Office) and Officer
Jill Thissell (Independence
Police Department).
A graduation ceremony
will be held Friday at 11 a.m.
at the Oregon Public Safety
Academy, 4190 Aumsville
