Central’s Jori Kerr slides into home plate as Dallas catcher Ciara Greisen attempts to tag her out on Friday afternoon.
Central searches for answers after loss to Dallas
By Lukas Eggen
The Itemizer-Observer
INDEPENDENCE — Cen-
tral junior Jori Kerr was just
getting used to playing in
the outfield.
She had solidified her
spot as one of the Panthers’
most dependable gloves.
That all changed this
spring when Kerr moved
back to the infield at
shortstop.
“Prior to my
freshman
y e a r, I
never
Nash
played
outfield,”
Kerr said.
“Now,
I
haven’t played
infield since
eighth grade. It’s a
really big adjust-
ment because they’re
two very different positions.”
What was once second
nature — the timing, posi-
tions and the necessary
throws to make in an instant
— became something she
had to relearn quickly.
“I started a little rough,
but I’ve gotten a lot cleaner
and am getting some
outs,” Kerr said.

thers defeat
losses in league play have
come against the MWC’s top
three squads: Silverton, Dal-
las and Lebanon by a com-
bined score of 33-8.
“I think (Friday) is some-
thing we need to take as a
team and learn from it and
understand that should have
been a closer game,” senior
Kylie Nash said. “We have to
understand that it is unac-
ceptable how we
played
Woodburn 18-3 on April
12 and South Albany 9-3
on April 13. But, as the
team’s 8-2 loss to Dallas on
Friday showed, Central has a
long way to go to show it be-
longs among the Mid-
Willamette Conference’s
best teams.
The Panthers entered the
week in fourth place out of
seven teams in the MWC.
Each of Central’s four league
wins have come against the
leagues’ bottom three teams,
Corvallis, South Albany and
Crescent Valley, by a com-
bined score of 51-14.
Each of the Panthers’
and let it
get out of hand.”
Central trailed 3-2 enter-
ing the sixth inning. Dallas
scored five runs in the top of
the sixth to pull away for the
win.
“When it came down to it,
we left runners on base,”
Kerr said. “Ultimately that,
and a couple of errors are
what lost the game for us.”
Recovering from those
mistakes quickly must be a
priority.
“We will bounce back, but
we have to bounce back
sooner,” Kerr said. “We can’t
wait two or three plays or
one inning. That one inning
is what will kill us.”

Dragons rebound after first
losses during league play
By Lukas Eggen
The Itemizer-Observer
INDEPENDENCE — It
took a rivalry game to snap
Dallas’ softball team out of
a mini funk.
The Dragons de-
feated Central 8-2
on Friday, break-
ing a two-
game losing
streak after
opening the
week with
a 4-2 loss
to Silverton
on April 12.
“This was
a
huge
game for
us,” catch-
er Ciara
Greisen
s a i d .
“This is
our rival.
We pre-
pped re-
ally well
and worked on
our intensity.”
Dallas (10-3 over-
all, 5-2 Mid-
Willamette Con-
Nelson
ference) entered the week
in sole possession of sec-
ond place in the MWC. Fri-
day’s win ensured the Drag-
ons didn’t fall into a three-
way tie with Silverton and
Central.
“Coming off of
Lebanon and Silverton,
it felt like we were get-
ting a little down on
ourselves, especially
since we had been
doing so well at the be-
ginning of the season,”
coach Brandi Jackson
said. “We focused on
the little things in prac-
tice and
talked about having quali-
ty at bats and good things
will happen. That showed
(on Friday).”
Dallas broke open a
close game in the sixth
inning, scoring five
runs with two outs
to extend a 3-2
lead to 8-2.

Priebe finds calling in Jiu Jitsu
By Lukas Eggen
The Itemizer-Observer
DALLAS — Daniel Priebe
was living the life — or so he
thought.
It wasn’t until Priebe, a
former collegiate wrestler,
discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
that he saw his life could
have a greater purpose —
one that he hopes to share
with Polk County residents.
—
As a high school wrestler,
Priebe was part of a squad
that won state titles all four
years. He attended Arizona
State University to wrestle
at the collegiate level, but
an injury cut his career
short in 2001.
He was still involved in
the sport, becoming an as-
sistant wrestling coach at a
local high school, but it was-
n’t the same as competing.
Priebe sought to fill his
newly found free time the
way many college students
do.
“I was working, going to
school and partying,” Priebe
said. “I didn’t really have
anything to keep me out of
trouble. I got a job and start-
ed getting lazy.”
On the surface, he was
having a blast.
Below it, he hid a pain he
wasn’t ready to deal with.
