girls basketball team closed
out the regular season with a
54-44 win over Woodburn
on Friday.
The Panthers clinched the
Mid-Willamette Confer-
ence’s fourth seed and host-
ed Eagle Point Tuesday after
press time in a state play-in
game.
The winner advances to
the first round of the state
playoffs on Friday.
The Panthers finished the

record overall and 8-6 mark
in league play.

BLACHLY — Perrydale’s
boys basketball season came
to an end in the first round
of the 1A state playoffs on
Feb. 24.
The Pirates lost to Triangle
Lake 63-43. Haylen Janesof-
sky and Brant Barnes each
scored 13 points during the
loss.
“I have no doubt the kids
played their hearts out,” Per-
rydale coach Mike Lowry
said. “It
was just
not our
night. We
got into a
game that
does not
suit our
s t y l e. We

knew that
we couldn’t get into a
shootout, and that is what
happened.”
Triangle Lake lost to Yon-
calla 73-45 in the second
round.
The Pirates finished the
season with a 19-8 record
overall and a 14-2 mark in
Casco League play, becom-
ing regular season co-cham-
pions along the way.
“It was a great season and I
could not have asked for a
better group of young men to
spend the season with,”
Lowry said. “This group of
seniors have accomplished
so much in their four years.
They are the first group to
win both football and basket-
ball league championships.”

BILLINGS, Mont. — West-
ern Oregon’s men’s basket-
ball team ended the regular
season with a pair of confer-
ence wins. The Wolves de-
feated Concordia 81-74 on
Feb. 23 before beating Mon-
tana State Billings 80-72 on
Thursday.
Devon Alexander scored a
team-high 19 points, leading
five WOU players who
scored at least 10 points.
The Wolves enter the
Great Northwest Athletic
Conference championships
at Lacey, Wash., as the No. 1
seed. WOU will play the win-
ner
of
Central
Washington/Seattle Pacific
Friday at 2:15 p.m.
The winner advances to
the conference title game
Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Western Oregon and Cen-
tral Washington split its sea-
son series, with the home
team winning each game.
WOU defeated Seattle Pacif-
ic 96-90 in overtime on Jan. 7
and 84-82 on Feb. 6.

basketball team ended its
2015-16 season with a pair of
home losses. The Wolves fell to
Saint Martin’s 62-53 on Thurs-
day and Seattle Paciic 55-40
on Saturday.
“Despite the outcome, I
thought we played hard and
gave our seniors all we had,”
WOU coach Holli Howard-Car-
penter said. “The crowd was
great, and it was nice to have
so much support for our last
game. There are several posi-
tives we can take from this sea-
son. We made improvements,
a n d we s t aye d to g e t h e r
through tough times. A season
like this reveals a person’s true
character, and I believe we
have the right character within
our program moving forward.”
WOU inished the season
with a 4-24 record overall.
DOBSON, SULTESSA AND
RIBICH SET SCHOOL MARKS:
Three WOU track and ield run-
ners set new school records at
the Seattle Paciic Final Qualii-
er on Saturday. Kaleb Dobson
set a school record in the 60-
meter hurdles (8.25 seconds in
his qualifying heat), while
David Ribich placed irst in the
mile in 4:05.21. Badane Sultes-
sa beat his old record in the
800 with a time of 1:49.68. On
the women’s side, Laura Patrick
placed irst in the 200 (27.2).
Olivia Woods placed second in
the 400 (58.05). WOU will com-
pete at the Linield Icebreaker
on Friday and the Willamette
Opener on Saturday.

ADRIAN — Perrydale’s
girls basketball team’s run
in the state playoffs came to
an end on Friday. The Pi-
rates fell to Adrian 56-23 in
the second round of the
playoffs.
“It was a seven-and-a-
half hour trip,” coach Terry
Newton said. “The score
was a little deceiving. We
actually played fairly well,
we just could not hit any
shots. It was a great envi-
ronment and a great experi-
ence. They were just better
than us, it was as simple as
that.”

“We had great senior
leadership,” Newton said.
“Probably the biggest thing
this season was the experi-
ence for our younger play-
ers. We had three freshmen

game. That’s invaluable for
next year.”

Athlete of the Week
Marlon Tuipulotu
Central High
Tuipulotu, a junior, capped off an im-
pressive wrestling season, winning a 5A
state title at 285 pounds on Saturday. Tu-
ipulotu earned a 5-0 decision to take
home the title. For the year, Tuipulotu
lost just one match. Tuipulotu was one of four Central
wrestlers to place at the state championships, including
senior Collin Swinehart (second at 145) and juniors David
Negrete (fourth at 182) and Sam Crow (fourth at 195).
Badane Sultessa
Western Oregon
Sultessa, a senior runner for Western
Oregon’s track and field team, had a
strong meet at Seattle Pacific on Satur-
day. Sultessa finished the men’s 800-
meter run in 1 minute, 49.68 seconds.
That broke the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor
record, a mark that he previously set. Sultessa earned confer-
ence player of the week honors for his performance, which
was one of three school records to be set on Saturday.
