Relay for Life event
Friday, Saturday
Relay for Life will hold an
event at the Majestic The-
ater in Dallas on Friday and
Saturday.
Event will include ven-
dors, crafters and on-site
massages and will run from
noon to 8 p.m. on Friday
and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sat-
urday.
A game night featuring
bingo and a quarter auction
will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.
on Friday. Saturday will in-
clude a fashion show, dance
group, vocalists and hon-
orary survivors of Polk
County ceremony.
There will also be presen-
tations and booths with in-
formation about cancer
awareness and prevention.
St. Thomas to host
Lenten series
St. Thomas Episcopal

The series will begin with
a worship service at 5:30
p.m., soup supper at 6 p.m.
and a video lecture series on
the Old Testament with dis-

Living with chronic
pain workshop
The Dallas Senior Center
will offer a free, six-week
workshop featuring skills
for living with chronic pain.
The Living Well program fo-
cuses on self-management
skills, including working
with your health care team,
managing symptoms and
medications, setting weekly
goals, getting support from
family and friends, learning
how to eat well and be ac-
tive.
Class materials, including
a course book and CD, are
provided without charge.
Classes will be held
ever y Wednesday from
March 2 to April 6 at the
senior center, 955 SE Jeffer-

Helen Marie Murphy
Glodt, 99, of Salem died Feb.
20 in Salem.
She was the great-grand-
daughter
of pioneer
Rev. John
E. Murphy,
who gave
the land
for what is
now West-
e r n O re -
gon Uni-
versity, and wife of Salem
restauranteur, John T. Glodt.
She graduated in 1937
from Oregon Nor mal
School, now Western Oregon
University, and taught in
Rock Creek and Kinton. She
and her husband owned and
operated restaurants in Gre-
sham, Hillsboro, Prineville,
Seaside, La Grande, Keizer
and Salem. J's Café in Mon-
mouth and Roberts Crossing
in Salem are still in the fami-
ly.
She was a member of
Jason Lee Methodist, Zenith,
ABWA, and longtime Salem
bowling leagues.
She was one of a group of
Salem ladies who starred in
the 1960s Bisquick commer-
cial that ran for several years
on TV nationwide. She was
well-known for her apple
dumplings, cakes and flow-
ers. She loved gardening,
traveling and handwork.
Survivors include her chil-
dren, Barbara Williams,
James and John Glodt; nine
grandchildren; 14 great-
grandchildren; three great-
great-grandchildren.

Christopher
Dobson
Dec. 2, 1950 – Feb. 13, 2016
Christopher Dobson, 65,
of Dallas, died Feb. 13 in
Dallas from injuries sus-
tained in a fall in his home.
He was born in Berkeley,
Calif., to Elizabeth and
Robert Dobson.
Christopher moved to
Switzerland with his family
in 1959, and attended an in-
ternational school in Gene-
va. His family traveled
throughout Europe and
around the world on home
leave every two years. These
travels kindled his interest in
different environments, cul-
tures, cuisines, beliefs and
spiritual traditions, which
persisted throughout his life.
He graduated from the
University of California,
Berkeley, with a major in ge-
netics, then obtained a mas-
ter’s in history of science
from Oregon State Universi-
ty.
Christopher loved engag-
ing conversations, especially
on controversial topics such
as religion and politics. He
had a curious, questioning
mind. He welcomed people
and wanted to know how
they thought and what they
were passionate about.
Those who knew him were
touched by his hospitality
and generous spirit as well
as his incredible cooking.
As his children were grow-
ing up, he was always in-
volved in their activities. He
was a volunteer soccer
coach and put in many
hours building an addition
to Luckiamute Valley Char-
ter School.
He always made time for
his children whether it was
art projects, helping with
homework, or involving
them with activities around
the farm. Especially fond
memories are cooking to-
gether, camping trips and
annual treks to search for
morel mushrooms.
He was an amazing cook
and opened “A Thyme Gar-
den Restaurant” in NE Port-
land, in 1981. It featured
elaborate multi-course
meals with paired wines. His
culinary creativity won him
accolades in Gourmet mag-
azine.
Christopher loved nature,
raising birds and collecting
insects in childhood. He had
a keen eye and a passion for
growing plants.
His dream to have a vine-
yard and winery was finally
realized when his family
moved to acreage with a
vineyard in the Dallas area
in 1988. The vision of his
vineyard and artisan winery
will live on through his chil-
dren, Florian, Vita, and
Siena.
