Senior center offers
management class
The Monmouth Senior
Center will offer a lifestyle
management class begin-
ning Monday from noon to
12:30 p.m. The weekly class
will run through March 28.
There is no charge to at-
tend. The class will deal with
a variety of issues, including
having diabetes, high blood
pressure, anxiety and heart
disease. Register through
the office.

Friday in Monmouth
Community Calendar is a listing of upcoming events
taking place in Polk County that are open to the public.

The Monmouth Senior
Center will host a beginner
quilt class Friday from 1 to 4
p.m. Arlene Kovash will offer
demos on quilting supplies.
The class is for those who
want to start quilting and
don’t know where to start.
The cost is $5 and will be
paid for at the start of class.
Auction and dinner
to benefit CHS FFA
The 24th Central High
School FFA Auction and
Dinner will be held Satur-
day. A silent auction kicks
off the night’s festivities
from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner runs
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. followed
by an oral auction at 7 p.m.
A tri-tip dinner will be
served.
Cost is $12 for adults, $6
for children aged 6-12 and
children 6 and younger are
free.

Dallas Historian launched
an updated version of

The website, devoted to

Museum speaker
tells of first murder
Tom Branigar, Polk Coun-
ty History Museum
archivist, will tell the story
about the first murder in the
county at the museum at
1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
In February 1852, Return
William Everman, a tran-
sient laborer, murdered
Cyrenius Hooker who was a
well-known early settler. The
story continues to include a
jail break, a hanging and
one of the accomplices
being sold to a local farmer
near Buena Vista.
Refreshments will be pro-
vided.
The museum is on the
south end of the parking
area of the Polk County Fair-
grounds and Event Center,
520 S. Pacific Highway
(99W) in Rickreall.

Indy Police to host
coffee with a cop
Officers from the Inde-
pendence Police Depart-
ment will host Coffee with a
Cop from 7 to 9 a.m. on Sat-
urday at McDonald’s, 1315
Monmouth St., Independ-
ence.
The event is an opportu-
nity for officers and commu-
nity members to come to-
gether in an informal, neu-
tral space to discuss com-
munity issues, build rela-
tionships, and share a cup of
coffee.
The event is free, and so is
the coffee.
Coffee with a Cop is a na-
tional initiative supported
by the U.S. Department of
Justice, office of community
oriented policing services.
The program aims to ad-
vance the practice of com-
munity policing through im-
proving relationships be-
tween police officers and
community members one
cup of coffee at a time.
