Police Department
takes part in blitz
The Independence Police
Department will take part in
the 2016 Seatbelt Blitz Feb.
8-21. During this period,
special attention will be
paid to proper seatbelt use,
proper child restraints, tex-
ting and speeding.
Speeding and distracted
driving continue to be a
major cause of accidents
and fatalities. You are 23
times more likely to be in an
accident while texting and
driving and four times more
likely to be in an accident if
you use your phone in a tra-
ditional manner, according
to information provided by
the Independence Police
Department.
Polk flag design
contest now open
A contest to design a Polk
County flag is now open.
The contest is open to
everyone. The winning de-
sign will be honored during
a ceremony planned for this
fall.
Submissions may be en-
tered through May 13.
The top five finalists will
be chosen by Polk County
Commissioners on May 27.
A three-day public voting
period will take place during
the Polk County Fair, held
Aug. 11-13.
The winner will be un-
veiled on Sept. 7 during the
commissioners meeting at
the Polk County Courthouse.
One entry per person and
entrants must reside in Polk
County. A maximum of five
colors may be used in the

New Garden Club
seeks members
The new Dallas Garden
Club seeks those who have a
passion for gardening. An
informational meeting will
be held on Monday at 7 p.m.

of the Oregon State Federa-
tion of Garden Clubs.

presents summit
The Marion-Polk Food
Share will put on the Mid-
Valley Food Summit Satur-
day at Willamette Universi-
ty’s Putnam University Cen-
ter, 900 State St., Salem.
Tickets cost $15 for the
event, which runs from 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Online reg-
istration closes Wednesday
(today). Tickets may be
available at the door.
The summit is designed
to connect food growers,
processors, buyers, garden-
ers and eaters.

KVCS offers radio
technician class
Kings Valley Char ter
School will sponsor a free
amateur radio technician
class aimed at helping at-
tendees pass the FCC ama-
teur radio technician class
license exam.
The class will be offered
Tuesday or Wednesday

noons during the last two
weeks of February and four
weeks in March at KVCS,

Monmouth Public Li-
brary’s Adult Coloring Club
is on Thursday from 5:30 to

Tuesday Pancake Supper is
