Avgi: Senior forward ranks
Pirates extend win streak to five second in GNAC in scoring
PERRYDALE GIRLS BASKETBALL
By Lukas Eggen
The Itemizer-Observer
PERRYDALE — Perry-
dale’s girls basketball team
defeated Falls City, South-
west Christian and St. John
Bosco last week to improve
to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in
Casco League play.
The Pirates defeated the
Mountaineers 30-25 on Jan.
5 and Southwest Christian
45-24 on Thursday before
downing St. John Bosco 43-
30 on Friday.
“We talked about having
that killer instinct,” Perry-
dale coach Terry Newton
said. “We
have to
learn to
put peo-
ple away
better.
T h e y ’r e
starting to
get that.”
McGill
Telaney
Newton had 10 points
against Falls City, while
Anna McGill scored 26
points against Southwest
Christian.
The Pirates led by as
many as 20 against St. John
Bosco, a positive sign for an
inexperienced team that
had lost
t h r e e
straight
g a m e s
prior to
Dec. 29.
“I think
the girls
see that if
Newton
you don’t
catch and play and start over
thinking, that’s when you
start missing shots,” Newton
said. “Trusting themselves
will come with experience.”
Perrydale hosts Crosshill
Christian on Friday and
Jewell on Tuesday at 5:30
p.m. The Pirates, who are
playing three freshmen —
Shylar Halverson, Sydney
Perkins and Alyssia Lux —
hope that these wins serve
as a confidence boost for a
still-developing team going
forward.
“This team is not what
Perrydale’s been,” Newton
said. “We’ve always had a
lot of really good athletes.
This group is learning, but
they’re one of the hardest
working teams I’ve ever
had. They just keep going.
Hopefully when we need it
most, that killer instinct is
there.”
Continued from Page 10A
“I always knew we were
good since I came here,”
Avgi said. “We have lost
some big games in the past,
but this year the experience
helps. We have four or five
starters back from last year
and coach ( Jim) Shaw
brought in a lot of good
players to help on the
bench.”
Those bench players in-
clude Tanner Omlid, who
averages 9.9 points and 3.0
steals per game.
WOU plays at Simon
Fraser on Thursday and at
Western Washington on
Saturday as the Wolves
hope to continue to drive
toward a regular season
conference title.
“I look at rankings to kind
of gauge where we’re at,”
Avgi said. “We know we have
to win every game. … I’ve al-
ways felt like we’ve had a tar-
get on our back and you
have to play like you do to
be successful.”
