Central’s boys soccer team lost to Wilsonville 6-1 on Nov.
3 in the first round of the 5A state playoffs.
WILSONVILLE — Facing
the top-ranked team in the
state, Central’s boys soccer
team lost to Wilsonville 6-1
in the first round of the state
playoffs on Nov. 3.
Despite the loss, the Pan-
thers had a lot to be proud of
during their performance.
“I feel that we handled
ourselves well,” Central
coach Carlos Esquivel said.
“We played hard throughout
the match. We can’t take
anything away from a team
like Wilsonville. They had
the speed that is expected
from a team that plays that
well. We fought hard and
gave what we could. I’m
proud of our guys.”
With Esquivel’s first year
as head coach and an inex-
perienced roster, the Pan-
thers finished with a 5-9-2
record overall and 3-4 mark
in Mid-Willamette Confer-
ence play.
This season saw several
players make sacrifices, in-
cluding Evan Hoover who
made the switch from for-
ward to defense.
“He had such enthusiasm
to play a different position,”
Esquivel said. “He learned
the position well. He’s an ag-
gressive player and he im-
proved our defense a lot
through his play.”
With one year under his
belt, Esquivel said he’s ready
to continue to build the soc-
cer tradition at Central.
“We’re a young team and
we still have a lot to im-
prove on to be a successful
team,” Esquivel said. “A lot
of that goes on me. I’ve
learned a lot this season. I
believe that with time and
hard work, we’ll improve
greatly. I hope we continue
to get support, not just
throughout the soccer sea-
son, but throughout the
year. I believe we can build
a very good soccer program
in the short future.”

Athlete of the Week
David Ribich
Western Oregon
Ribich, a sophomore cross-country
runner, accomplished something on
Saturday that Western Oregon hasn’t
seen since 2011. Ribich placed 11th at
the NCAA Division II Cross-country
West Region race, finishing the 10,000-meter course in 30
minutes, 11.95 seconds. Ribich qualified for the NCAA Di-
vision II Cross-country Championship Race on Nov. 21 in
Missouri.
Phillip Fenumiai
Western Oregon
Fenumiai, a redshirt sophomore, did-
n’t let the rain dampen his performance
during WOU’s football team’s 33-15 vic-
tory over South Dakota School of Mines
on Saturday. Fenumiai may have only
completed 10 passes, but nearly half of them (four) went
for touchdowns as the Wolves won their sixth-straight
game and improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Great North-
west Athletic Conference play.

The loss knocked them
into the consolation bracket
on Saturday, but players did-
n’t let that get them down.
“We realized we were here
because we deserved it,”
Calonder said. “We worked
hard and we knew we could
enjoy the tournament.”
The Pirates ended their
season winning four of their
final five matches.
“We became closer as a
family,” Calonder said. “All of
our skills started clicking to-
gether. We were playing as a
team toward the end of the
season and everyone helped
one another with their skill
set.”
The Pirates will lose six
seniors to graduation this
year, but Dickey hopes the
progress the team made this
season will serve as a blue-
print for future success.
“I hope they see that it
takes time to build a team,”
Dickey said. “You can’t just
walk in on the first practice
and expect to play the way
they did at state. We didn’t
start out the way we ended. I
hope the young players
coming in remember that.”
