CORRECTIONS
In the Oct. 7 story “Steps to
recovery,” Rebecca Strader’s
title was incorrect. She is a
pastor in Monmouth and
Falls City, with Christ’s Church
Methodist and Presbyterian
United, and Falls Cit y
Methodist Church.
The Oct. 7 story “DSD to
clarify gun policy for staff”
needs to be clarified. School
boards have the authority to
decide if students, employees,
or volunteers can possess
firearms on school property.
The I-O regrets the errors.
If you see anything that re-
quires a correction, call 503-

County workers recycle, reuse
Employees take old wood and make new tables for BOC
By Jolene Guzman
The Itemizer-Observer
POLK COUNTY — Dave
Dyer and Heath Kumnick,
building maintenance em-
ployees for Polk County,
were in the process of insu-
lating the attic at the public
works building when they
found a pile of old, but stur-
dy wood beams.
They had been cut at
some point in the building’s
history and, by building
maintenance employees’
best guess, were installed
pre-1950s.
The timbers had suffered
a bit from sitting in the attic
for decades, but with some
TLC, could be given new
life.
Dyer and Kumnick and
Dale Halavinka, a welder
and fabricator, decided that
new life should be as tables
for the Polk County Board of
Commissioners conference
room.
With approval from the
board, the men examined
the wood for the best pieces
and mapped out a design.
Dyer said after sorting
through the wood, they
didn’t have much to spare,
so they were under pressure
to do flawless work.
They did.
Cleaned to a new shine
and finished with glass and
metal, the tables are quite an
improvement over what
could have replaced the
conference room’s old furni-
ture, Kumnick said.
“They could have built
something Formica, like
everyone else has,” Kumnick
said.
In another homage to
Polk County’s past, old
bridge washers were at-
tached to the front as finish-
ing pieces.
“We thought they would
represent the county with
the old timber and the
metal,” said Kumnick.
The process took about
eight months to complete,
with the men working on the
tables as time allowed.
“They did their regular
jobs, and when they could,
they worked on this,” said
Matt Hawkins, the county’s
administrative services di-
rector.
The team wasn’t done
with the commissioners’
and staff table.
They built a matching pic-
ture frame for the old black
and white Polk County
Courthouse photo hanging
on the wall behind the com-
missioners table and a table
for BOC meeting guest
speakers.
Looking over the solid-
looking table on Monday
about a week after they were
placed in the room, the men
were pleased to see the
product of months of work
be put to use.
“It’s awesome,” Dyer said.
“They turned out great,”
Halavinka added.
