host fundraiser
DALLAS — Cross Creek
Golf Course is accepting
applications for its 17th
Annual Turkey Shoot Golf
Tournament on Nov. 14.
The two-person scram-
ble will begin at 9 a.m. All
players will win a turkey
and compete for net, gross
and hole prizes.
Cost is $55 per player
and one can of food. Entry
includes green fees, snacks
and tee prizes.
Space is limited to the
irst 110 players to pay
fees. Players may sign up
as a team or as individuals.
Registration deadline is
Nov. 10. All food and a por-

go toward providing

Winter sports
registration
DALLAS — Winter
sports registration begins
Nov. 4 at Dallas High. Ath-
letes must be registered by
Nov. 10 to be able to prac-
tice on Nov. 16, the irst of-
icial practice.
Cost is $150 for all
sports.
Those qualifying for free
lunch must provide the let-
ter received from the dis-
trict oice. The cost will
then be reduced to $35.
There is no reduction for
the swim team.

SALEM — The Pirates are
playoff bound.
Perrydale hosts North
Clackamas Christian
Wednesday (today) at 6:30
p.m. in the first round of the
OSAA Class 1A State Volley-
ball Championships after
taking second in the Casco
League Tournament on Sat-
urday.
The Pirates defeated
Crosshill Christian 25-14,
All-league
• Seniors Taylor Price and Kolbie Calonder earned first team
all-Casco League honors on Saturday.
• Seniors Anna McGill and Telaney Newton received second
team all-league recognition.
• Senior Hannah Hallock earned an honorable mention.
25-18, 25-21 in its opening
match, clinching the team’s
spot at state.

and what we needed to do
to beat them. I don’t think

Central duo off to state
Hartford, McBeth earn spots at the state cross-country meet Saturday

third year in a row, Central’s
Abby McBeth is headed to
the state cross-country
meet, and the junior has a
new perspective on the ex-
perience.
“Honest-

McBeth
said.

the top seven. Hartford took
third in 19 minutes, 25.19
seconds, while McBeth
placed fifth in 20:13.68.
McBeth’s time wasn’t as
fast as she hoped, but she’s
thankful to be headed to
state after where she’s been.
“It’s taken so much for me
to get where I am,” McBeth
said. “I’m excited for a break-
through track season be-
cause I’m not even close to
where I want to be in-shape-
wise.”
McBeth’s path to the
state meet has been her
most difficult yet. Health
issues from over training
last year caused her doc-
tors to require a mandato-
ry three-month break from
running.
“I’ve never taken that
much time off since middle
school,” McBeth said.
She entered this season
completely healthy, but after
missing crucial months of
offseason workouts.
“Ever yone’s on three
months of training and, day
one, I’m just starting out,”
McBeth said. “It was discour-
aging. It still is sometimes. I
try to stay as positive as I
can.”

Panthers move into tie for MWC lead

INDEPENDENCE — The
Central Panthers are grow-
ing up at the right time.
Just weeks after losing
back-to-back games by a
combined four points, the
Panthers defeated Corvallis
36-30 on Friday — a win
that moved Central into a
three-way tie for first place
in the Mid-Willamette Con-
ference and moved the
Panthers (5-3 overall, 4-2
MWC) within a win of
clinching a spot in the state
playoffs.

Mendazona, a sopho-
more, ended the game with
254 passing yards and three
touchdowns — a far cry
from his first start, a 10-0
loss to Bend on Sept. 4 when
he threw for 51 yards and
two interceptions.
“I was ver y ner vous
(against Bend),” Mendazona
said. “It didn’t feel good after,
but I stuck in there.”
Mendazona has helped
the Panthers’ offense begin
to click in recent weeks.
