Prescribed burns in Polk County
POLK COUNTY — The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natu-
ral Resources Conservation Service, in conjunction with the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service, plans to perform several prescribed
burns on three easement sites in Polk County.
The sites are enrolled in the Wetland Reserve Program. The
locations are Quad Farms WRP, 24.5 acres, about four miles
north of Dallas and Rickreall; Loop WRP, 10 acres, about ive
miles north of West Salem; Lippsmeyer WRP, 41 acres, about
1.75 miles south of Independence.
The exact date and time of the burns will vary based on
weather conditions, but the anticipated time window is be-
tween Sept. 30 and Nov. 1.
Technical staf will monitor conditions to perform the burn
when the weather and wind conditions are in line with the
speciications in the prescribed burn plan.
Sun causes outages for MINET

Independence Networks cable television services will experi-
ence interference from the sun’s orbit, said Jerry Fouse, MINET’s
central oice engineer.
Outages began Tuesday and will last through Oct. 14, he
said.
“The outage is caused when the sun aligns with our receiv-

outages should last for approximately 10 minutes.”
If channel outages lasts longer than 10 minutes, contact
MINET at 503-837-0700.

Brown marmorated stink bugs invading homes
Itemizer-Observer staf report
POLK COUNTY — The Ore-
gon Department of Agricul-
ture is receiving a number of
calls from residents concerned
about brown marmorated
stink bug populations in and
around their homes.
The invasive insect
species was first detected in
Oregon in 2004 and has es-
tablished itself in several

urban areas. It is spreading
to suburban and rural com-
munities.
It is not a structural pest,
according to a release from
the ODA, and does not pose
any risk to human health.
However, it releases an un-
pleasant odor when dis-
turbed and can cause dam-
age to agricultural crops and
home gardens.
The best advice to reduce
the bug is to be sure points
of access to buildings are
sealed.
The bugs are seeking a
place to overwinter, and
keeping them out of the
house in the first place is
the easiest way to stop
them.
Spraying poison is unlike-
ly to rid a home of these
bugs, said Jim LaBonte, ODA
entomologist.

YAMHILL COUNTY — A Grand Ronde woman was killed in a
vehicle crash on Sept. 30 at the intersection of Highway 18 and
Red Prairie Road in Yamhill County.
At 10 a.m., Oregon State Police troopers and emergency per-
sonnel responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident.
Police said a 1994 Ford Escort was traveling northbound on
Red Prairie Road when it pulled out in front of a 2004 Peterbilt
garbage truck traveling eastbound on Highway 18.
The Peterbilt collided with the Ford and both came to rest
on Highway 18.
The operator of the Ford, Mary E. Rickard, 55, was transport-
ed by air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center where
she later died from her injuries.
The driver of the Peterbilt, Antonio Chavez, 23, of McMin-
nville, was not injured and has cooperated with the investiga-
tion.
Initial investigation indicated Rickard failed to yield the right
of way to the truck, police said.
