Jerusha Dressel is a competitive swimmer at the collegiate level, while Elizabeth Dressel swims varsity for the Dallas Drag- ons. That love for swimming spread to the family’s youngest, 13-year-old Isaiah Dressel. “My sisters were on the swim team, so I wanted to do it, too,” Dressel said. “They told me it would be difficult, but I wanted to give it a try.” Dressel was excited for the chance to try and best his older siblings’ accom- plishments, but he’s since learned an important les- son — going at his own pace. Since joining the Blue D o l p h i n s Sw i m Te a m , Dressel has excelled in nu- merous events, especially freestyle, where he has competed in distances from 50 to 500-meters. It’s in the 50 freestyle Dressel is aiming bigger than ever before. “I want to make it to the state meet,” Dressel said. “To do that, I would have to get a 27 on my 50 freestyle.” See SPLASH, Page 13A Wild, Wild West CHS fall sports sign-ups to open INDEPENDENCE — Fall sports registration for Cen- tral High School will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. in the main office through Thursday. Sunday, the course will be home to the Summer Fling Disc Golf Tournament, the capstone on developer Hay- den Rue’s two-year effort to build a course in Independ- ence. With support and finan- cial backing of Monmouth Independence Networks (MINET), the city of Inde- pendence, Veal’s Bikes Plus and Capital City Disc Golf in Salem, Rue designed and built the 15-hole course himself. Rue even earned an internship with the city to complete the project and Fore! What: Summer Fling Disc Golf Tournament. When: Sunday. An avid disc golfer — he played professionally during his first two years at Western Oregon University — Rue said the idea to build the course stemmed from the urge to make playing his sport a little easier. “I was just at home in Monmouth, and I thought it would be nice to have a disc golf course closer to home,” he explained. “And I knew this was the biggest park (Riverview) around.” He approached MINET and later the city of Inde- pendence for assistance and began working on his vision. Last summer, the first seven holes were installed. Those holes are shorter and less challenging, designed to be approachable for golfers off all abilities. For those seeking a higher level of dif- ficulty, the back eight, locat- ed north of the amphithe- ater and across Ash Creek, should provide plenty of challenges. “I’ve seen quite a few fam- ilies playing out here,” Rue said. “There’s starting to be a lot of out-of-town people, which is good for the town.” See TOURNEY, Page 13A JOLENE GUZMAN/Itemizer-Observer Hayden Rue shows off one of the holes at Independence’s disc golf course at Riverview Park. www.facebook.com/pages/Polk-County-Itemizer-Observer/205062686252209 www.LesSchwab.com Mon -Fri 8am - 6pm Saturday 8am - 5pm www.twitter.com/PolkIOSports DALLAS 121 Main St • 503-623-8155 INDEPENDENCE 1710 Monmouth St • 503-838-6340
