‘Old timers’ welcomes all on Sunday Munchies: Cafe
Picnic reunion brings people, history, stories together at Dallas City Park
By Jolene Guzman
The Itemizer-Observer
DALLAS — In years past,
the Old Timers Reunion in
Dallas brought hundreds of
people to Dallas City Park
each August.
The Dallas Area Visitors
Center, which organizes the
tradition going in its 53rd
year, would like to see it re-
gain those numbers.
In recent years, the atten-
dance has been closer to 50
people.
“It used to be a huge
thing, 200 to 300 people,”
said Bonnie Dreier with the
Dallas Area Visitors Center,
who took over organizing
the annual event when for-
mer coordinators stepped
down in 2012. “I don’t know
if we can bring it back, but
we are going to try.”
Sunday, the “old timers”
will gather once again, and
the hope is a few more peo-
ple will show up who have
stories to share about their
experiences in Dallas.
Dreier said anyone is in-
vited, but especially those
who graduated in 1990 and
earlier.
She’s planning to add
events to the reunion this
year and in years to come —
such as a disc golf tourna-
ment — that would appeal
to guests of all ages.
Following a tradition es-
tablished years ago, there
will be tables with note-
books of old photos, guest
books, cards, letters and

Steven’s training has included learning skills such as in-
ventory, stocking and making business decisions. Five
years ago, the plan was to open a full-scale movie-themed
restaurant in Walnut Plaza. The dream looks a bit different
now, but Steven and his biggest support system — his
family — couldn’t be more proud.
Cheryl and Anthony, his sister, Natalie Eriksen, and his
grandparents, Jan and Steven Ahrendt, are all helping

Cheryl and An-
thony never put limits on what he could strive for.
Last weekend, they saw just what their son is capable of
achieving.
“We are seeing another side of Steven,” Cheryl said.
In addition to meeting a long-held goal, Steven is one of
the first people with a developmental disability in Oregon
to launch a small business with start-up help from the Of-
fice of Vocational Rehabilitation Service along with self-
employment support from the Office of Developmental
Disability Services. He’s also received assistance from
Monmouth-based Partnerships in Community Living.
Steven, as the business’ aptly named director, is learn-
ing to keep track of receipts and manage the business’
bank account. He makes final decisions on the menu,
which will feature a “director’s special” and a movie genre
theme of his choice each month.
He seems to enjoy his new role.
In the midst of a customer rush during the opening
weekend celebration Friday, at one point Cheryl could see
her son begin to relax and enjoy the experience. He was
smiling again.
“It’s going well,” she said. “Steven’s worked really hard.”

Dreier said she’s learned
much about Dallas in the
years since she became in-
volved.
“It’s pretty cool to come
out and see the history,”
Dreier said. “People spend
hours at the tables during
the reunion.”
