INDEPENDENCE — Independence Station, on the corner of
Second and Monmouth streets, went on the market about two
weeks ago, said George Grabenhorst, Realtor at Sperry Van
Ness out of Salem.
The unfinished 54,792-square-feet building on 0.68 acres of
land is listed at $3.4 million. The land is zoned for commercial
and retail.

POLK COUNTY — Polk
County Oregon State Uni-
versity Extension adopted a
2015-16 budget that will
allow the program to focus
resources on marketing and
growth.
The budget committee,
consisting of the three Polk
County commissioners and
three citizens, adopted the
budget on June 24.
The budget totaled
$382,500, with $377,500
going to operations and
$5,000 held in contingency.
The two biggest expendi-
tures in the budget are
$260,000 (up from $250,000
in 2014-15) for OSU staffing
and programs and $60,000
for renting fairgrounds facil-
ities.
Those amounts reflect a
nearly 4 percent growth in
revenue over the 2014-15
budget.
“With this year’s budget,
we are beginning to see
some growth,” said Polk
County Administrator Greg
Hansen, who serves as Ex-
tension’s budget officer, in
his budget message. “Hope-
fully, this increase in proper-
ty tax revenue continues so
we can maintain and ex-
pand services in the future.”
Polk’s Extension district is
still fairly new, with its first
formal budget in the 2011-
12 fiscal year. This marks the
first year tax revenue has in-

creased.
“The good news is that
property values increased a
little bit,” said Derek God-
win, the regional adminis-
trator for Extension’s west
central region. “This is our
first budget where we have a
little bit more money com-
ing into the Extension pro-
gram.”
The majority of approxi-
mately $10,000 increase will
be used for Extension staff,
but the remainder will be
used to refine marketing and
outreach programs in hopes
of recruiting more volun-
teers, particularly for its 4-H
programs.
“We want to grow our
programs, and a lot of that
comes from recruiting vol-
unteers to help, to get in-
volved in programs,” God-
win said. “It’s not a huge
amount of money, but it
does allow us to invest a lit-
tle bit more, update our
marketing materials.”

DALLAS — A Dallas resident reported missing on June 19
has been found dead.
Ronald Taylor, 67, was last seen by a relative on June 17 be-
fore heading to the Portland area for an appointment sched-
uled the next day. Taylor did not make his appointment, ac-
cording the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Taylor’s car was found abandoned June 19 in south Polk
County off Burbank Road near Gage Road. Police agencies
began a search — asking the public for assistance in finding
Taylor — after learning of the missed appointment and reports
that he had recently been somewhat despondent.
The search continued through June 21 and resumed last
weekend when search dogs located Taylor’s body not far from
where his vehicle was found.
According to the sheriff’s office, he suffered a self-inflicted
gunshot wound.
