Fourth: Celebrations promise to be fun, safe
Continued from 1A
Because of the large
crowds, the park will be
closed to boats, kayakers, and
canoers on Friday and Satur-
day during Western Day Fes-
tivities.
But don’t forget to cross
the S-curves to Monmouth,
where the Community Art
Show gives local artists a
chance to flaunt their work
with others.
Bounce houses, music
and a beer and wine garden
also grace Main Street Park
on Friday and Saturday.
On the big day, start off
with breakfast at the Polk
County Fire District No. 1
Station 90. And then? The
choices really are vast.
Dallas, Monmouth and In-
dependence all have fabulous
choices of activities on Satur-
day, and it may be possible to
see almost everything.
The Mini-Marathon, Chil-
dren’s Parade, Car Show and
Monmouth-Independence
Rotary Club’s Grand Parade
kick off in Monmouth at
Western Oregon University
and go past Main Street Park.
Where the grand parade
and mini-marathon end is
where the party begins again
in Riverview Park. Admis-
sion is $1 for the Fourth of
July. Proceeds pay for the
fireworks.
Over in Dallas, barbecues
have been heating up at
Dallas City Park for hours al-
ready for the BBQ Throw-
down competition, which
begins at 11 a.m.
Fifteen teams take pride
in their rubs, meats and
cooking techniques to create
mouthwatering selections.
Taste them for yourself
2015 Relay for Life of Polk County
How Do You Thank A Hero?
With every passing year of Relay For Life, I am more grateful to the incredible support this event receives from
its sponsors and more thankful to live in the Polk County community where generosity seems to know no
bounds. Over $30,000 was raised through sponsorship this year, coming from either cash contributions or goods
and services necessary to host an event this size. For the first time, all ten tents, all 50 8-foot tables, and all 100
folding chairs were donated rather than rented. Garbage/recycling service, porta-potties, bottled water ~ all do-
nated and all contributing to a very successful Relay. And can you imagine the impact the $20,000 in cash dona-
tions will have on cancer research and patient services!
Our sponsors are far more than donors ~ they’re heroes in the fight against cancer.
Please take time to thank them for their determination to find a cure.

MONMOUTH — A single-vehicle crash west of Mon-
mouth on Saturday claimed the life of one woman and in-
jured three other people.
At 6:53 a.m. on Saturday, a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by
Triston Ferguson, 21, of Salem, was traveling east on High-
way 194 about three miles west of Monmouth. Ferguson at-
tempted to negotiate a curve, but left the roadway on the
south side, spun out of control and rolled over several times
onto a field on the north side of the highway.
Several residents heard the crash and assisted with first aid
of the injured.
Catherine Bartlett-Twete, 20, of Salem, was partially eject-
ed during the crash, sustained critical injuries and was pro-
nounced dead on the scene.
Passenger Kayla Lane, 19, of Salem, sustained moderate
injury and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Hos-
pital. Passenger Kodi Cooper, 21, of Salem, was critically in-
jured and transported by helicopter to the Salem Hospital.
Furgeson sustained moderate injuries and was transported
to the Salem Hospital by ambulance.
The crash is under investigation by Oregon State Police.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who was with
the occupants prior to the crash, contact troopers at the
Salem Area Command: 503-375-3555. Senior Trooper Jay
Davis and recruit Kevin Ely are the primary investigators.
Polk County Fire District No. 1, Polk County Attorney’s Of-
fice, Marion-Polk Medical Examiner’s Office and the Oregon
Department of Transportation also responded at the scene.

The best thing about the
Fourth of July in Polk County
is there really is something for
everyone, whether it’s crowd-
