6A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • June 24, 2015 Polk County News OBITUARIES Glen Edward Clark May 6, 1941 – June 13, 2015 Glen Clark, 74, of Salem died June 13 in Salem. He was born in Fanshaw, Okla., to Everett and Lottie Clark. In 1948, the Clarks moved from Oklahoma and settled in Lebanon, where Glen graduated from Lebanon High School. While in high school, Glen met the love of his life, Carolyn Summers, and they were married in 1961. A f t e r graduating f r o m C h i c o State in California in 1969 with a de- gree in ed- ucation, Glen pursued his passion and 30-year career as a teacher, coach and counselor. After four years of teach- ing in California, Glen re- turned to Oregon in 1974, where he taught social stud- ies and was the boys head basketball coach at Central High School in Independ- ence, leading the Panthers to a state championship in 1975. In 1985, Glen received his master’s degree in counsel- ing from Oregon State Uni- versity. In 1986, Glen be- came vice principal/athletic director at Dallas High School. In 1990, he moved to Salem and became the di- rector of counseling at Sprague High School. While at Sprague, Glen enjoyed coaching the boys tennis team and winning the state championship in 1992. After retiring in 2001, Glen spent the next 10 years working for the Western Oregon University Educa- tion Department, where he worked to prepare the next generation of educators. Glen traveled with his wife and friends, spent countless hours with his family, was active in his church and spent the last year working as a chaplin at the Salem Hospital. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jacki, and brother, Johnny. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carolyn; sons, Jason Clark ( Juanita) of Monmouth and Jarred Clark (Rachel) of Salem; brother, Roger Clark ( Vicki) of Lebanon; five grandchil- dren; and large extended family. Memorial service was Sat- urday at The Peoples Church followed by a celebration of life reception. Contributions are sug- gested to World Missions in care of The Peoples Church. City View Funeral Home in Salem handled arrange- ments. Ione McDougal May 13, 1919 – June 15, 2015 Ione McDougal, 96, of Salem died June 15. She was born in Sheridan, Wyo., to George W. Jenkins and Millie Babcock Jenkins. Ione grew up in the Gre- sham area, where she met her husband John McDou- gal. They were married on Dec. 3, 1937, in Vancouver, Wash. She lived in the Portland area as a young adult and moved to Salem in the 1950s with her husband and three children. I o n e was a de- vout Chris- tian and a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Salem. She loved to sew and quilt, and generously volun- teered her sewing talents with the ladies at the Sev- enth-day Adventist Salem Community Dorcas Center. She also spent many years teaching Sabbath school at her church. She loved to spend time with family and always had a big hug and in- fectious laugh to share. She was preceded in death by her husband, John McDougal, brothers, Ran- som Jenkins, Troy Jenkins, and Arden Jenkins; and sis- ter, Arlene Jenkins. Survivors include her brother, Blaine (Anna) Jenk- ins of Phoenix, Ariz.; sons, Rick McDougal of Salem and John (Tammy) McDougal of Albany; daughter, Wilma (Marvin) Fast of Amity; nine grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; 14 great- great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. Coates Feb. 11, 1921 – June 15, 2015 James S. Coates, 94, of Dallas died June 15. He was born on the family farm in Osborne, Kan., to Alpha A. Coates and Carrie L. Stansberry Coates. He at- tended a one-room school- house and graduated from the e i g h t h grade in 1935. That y e a r, h e moved to California with his f a m i l y after their farmhouse burned down. He graduated from Mon- rovia High School and Pasadena Junior College, majoring in forestry. After Pearl Harbor, he en- listed in the Navy Seabees, where he spent two and a half years in the South Pacif- ic. He attended Midship- man’s School in New York, graduating in 1945 as a lieu- tenant junior grade, and married his high school sweetheart, Alberta M. Duryea, that same day. He worked as a land sur- veyor for Los Angeles Coun- ty for 26 years, then retired to Dallas. Here he established J & R Surveyors Inc., and raised cattle as a hobby at the Coates Charolais Ranch. He developed a champion bloodline through his Charolais bull, Del Rio, a well-known sire in the Charolais breed today. He was a member of Heifer Project International and an active member of the Dallas Kiwanis Club for 45 years. He was a faithful, ac- tive member of the Methodist church through- out his life. He was preceded in death by Alberta M. Duryea, his wife of 45 years; and Geneva Frazier, wife of nine years. Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Thelma Pillster; daughters, Sharron (John) Albee, Judy (Gary) Burns, Janice (Robert) Inwards, and Vicky (Gerald) Lewis; 11 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren; one great- great grandchild; and ex- tended family. Celebration of life was Fri- day at the United Methodist Church in Dallas, and grave- side service was at Restlawn Memory Garden in Salem. She was born on in Col- orado Springs, Colo., to Lewis and Cannie Vaughn Paul. She was raised in Col- orado Springs. June met Daniel Smith while he was stationed in the military at Fort Carson, Colo., and they later mar- ried. They lived in Colorado, Oregon and eventually set- tled in Sheridan permanent- ly in 1969. June sold Avon and en- joyed arts and crafts. For many years she had a table at the Rickreall Flea Market. She enjoyed collecting cookie jars. At one point, she graduat- ed from bartending school, but never used it. June was a classically trained concert pianist and enjoyed per- forming at many different events. She loved her grand- children. Survivors include her son, Timothy of Sheridan; sister, Betty; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchil- dren. Graveside service was June 17 at Salt Creek Ceme- tery in Dallas. She was born in Hoskins to Fred and Minnie Niggli. The family moved to Dal- las, where she graduated from Dallas High School in 1962. Susan joined the Navy and was stationed in Florida. Susan was an active member of the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society. Susan loved spending time at the Oregon Coast and with family and friends. She enjoyed a variety of music, counting Johnny Cash as one of her favorites. She was preceded in death by siblings, Norma Jean, Nadine, Richard, Kath- leen Baker and Dorothy Bernard. Survivors include siblings, Patricia Kuhns, John Niggli, Sharon (Richard) Payne, Karen Van Bibber, Larry (Rosemar y) Niggli and Nancy Burks; and a large ex- tended family. Lawrence ‘Larry’ Abraham Buhler Dec. 4, 1924 – June 21, 2015 Lawrence “Larry” Abra- ham Buhler, 90, of Dallas died Sunday. He was born in Dallas to Jacob A. and Agnes E. Buh- ler. Larry enjoyed a happy and secure childhood, n e v e r doubting for a mo- ment the love of his parents. He was bap- tized in 1936. He at- tended schools at Bridgeport and Salem, always encour- aged by his parents to value education. Later he attend- ed Tabor College for a brief period, the U.S. Navy Hospi- tal Corps Schools in Idaho and Seattle, and Oregon State College. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy Medical Corps. He saw overseas duty that included the invasion of Peliliu, an is- land of the Pacific. Larry married Edna Hein- richs in 1946. During the course of their married life, Larry and Edna would build the three homes in which they raised their family. Larry’s love of things med- ical allowed him to work in para-medical fields such as pharmacy, nursing, and as a physician’s assistant. During the 20 years prior to retiring, Larry and Edna owned and operated a retail delivery service, contracting with Montgomery Ward’s national headquarters in Chicago. As he matured in his Christian life, God’s word became increasingly impor- tant. He was involved in the study and teaching of it as opportunity permitted. Larry’s signature song was “Amazing Grace.” His single most and great- est joy was his family, each person — from the eldest to the youngest. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin who lived for 6 months. Survivors include his wife, Edna; children, Nancy, Alan, and Audrey and their spous- es; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Arley, a veteran, served in the Army during the Viet- nam War. He was stationed in Korea at what would be the last MASH Hospital. He married his wife, Susan, on Aug. 19, 1972. Arley had been a sheet metal foreman and had lived in Dallas for 36 years. Survivors include his wife, Susan of Dallas; father, Arley Spain of Longview, Wash.; daughter, Angela Gates (Brad) of Bend; son, Ryan Spain (Molly) of Springfield; sister, Rita Conklin of Dallas; four grandchildren; and ex- tended family.
