Richard ‘Dick’
James Malone
Sept. 30, 1931 – June 9, 2015
Richard “Dick” James
Malone, 83, of Dallas died
June 9.
He was born in Min-
neapolis to Raymond and
Ethel Cooper Malone.
They moved to Newport
in 1935. He attended New-
port Grade School until
1946, and then moved to
Santa Ana, Calif., and gradu-
ated from Orange High
School in 1950. Dick joined
the Air Force in December of
1950, and served in Korea
during the Korean War as a
gunner on a B26 aircraft.
He was discharged in
1954, and moved to Ana-
heim, Calif.
Dick attended California
Institute of Manufacturing
Engineering. He worked in
the aerospace industry as a
design engineer and con-
sultant until 1962.
He then moved back to
Oregon and settled in Lake
Oswego. Dick worked for
Towmotor Corp., a division
of Caterpillar Inc., in Dallas.
He moved
to Salem in
1966, and
retired
f r o m
Caterpillar
in 1989. He
and his
wife Carol
moved to
Dallas in
1993.
He liked
traveling,
hunting,
fishing and woodworking.
He also enjoyed sports and
was an avid Notre Dame fan.

He did volunteer advocate
work for 20 years for abused
children in the Polk County
Court Appointed Special Ad-
vocates (CASA). Dick was a
member of St. Philip
Catholic Church in Dallas
and the Knights of Colum-
bus as well as the American
Legion.
He was preceded in death
by his brother, Bob, and
grandson, Nyland Espedal.
Survivors include his wife,
Carol Malone; daughters
Cyndie Douglas of Lake Os-
wego, Janet Groff of Salem,
Lori Espedal and Kathy
Miyazono, both of Portland,
and Patty Keller of Vancou-
VIRGINIA C. MILLER
April 6, 1920 - June 8, 2015
Virginia Miller passed away Monday af-
ternoon, June 8th. Virginia, or Ginnie as
she was known to friends, was born in
Kansas City, Kansas, on April 6, 1920 to
Edward and Lillian Carter. She celebrated
her 95th birthday this Spring. After grad-
uating from Wyandotte High School in
Kansas City, Virginia attended a local com-
munity college. She began dating Robert
L. Miller during her junior year in high
school. After a two year courtship, they
were married February 19, 1939. As new-
lyweds, they lived in Kansas City, Kansas,
until Bob was transferred to Los Angeles,
California to work in the office of Fred
Harvey’s at the then new Los Angeles train
terminal.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor,
Bob enlisted into the Army Air Corps and
began training to be a pilot. While stationed in the United
States, Virginia was able to move from base to base locations
in California, Texas, and Colorado to be close to him. When
her husband was shipped overseas to England, Virginia re-
turned to California and went to work for The Pacific Electric
Railway Station, 6th and Main, Los Angeles, California, in the
Conductor’s Accounting Department. World War II forever
changed and shaped their lives as it did to so many Americans.
Friendships were made for life. Without question, Virginia
is one of the most patriotic people her children have ever
known.
When Bob returned from overseas and was discharged from
active duty, he went to work for the Bank of America, and
Virginia returned to being a housewife and mother, something
she enjoyed greatly her entire life. As their children were
growing up, she kept very involved in their activities by vol-
unteering with the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Parent Teacher
Association, and Little League. Bob’s career took them to Los
Angeles, Redlands, Santa Ana, and La Jolla, California. After
retiring, they moved to Dallas, Oregon, in the Fall of 1974,
relishing the country life.
Virginia’s faith in God was strong. She was a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church in Dallas. She was creative, artistic,
an avid reader, lover and protector of all animals, gardener ex-
traordinaire, a great friend, and whether we call her Mom,
Mama, Gramma, or MaMom, she was the perfect mother and
grandmother. She taught each of us to be more loving and
caring individuals. She was a blessing to one and all.
Virginia was predeceased by both parents, her husband
Bob, son-in-law Dave Linn, and grandson Robbie Miller. She
will be dearly missed by sons Gregg Miller (MaryAnn),
Robert Miller, daughter Beverlee Linn, grandchildren Brent
(Heidi), Todd (Kami), Jerad (Andrea), Emily (Dan), Lori
(Isaac), and Rees (Tami), great grandchildren Cody, Shelby,
Kaylee, Kelsey, Makena, and one on the way compliments of
Jerad and Andrea.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, June 16th at the Dal-
las Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Dallas Mortuary
Tribute Center. Visitation was Monday, June 15th.
In lieu of flowers, contributions, in care of the mortuary,
to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or an ani-
mal charity of your choice would be welcomed and very much
appreciated.
A special thank you to Dallas Retirement Village-Health
Care staff for taking such good care of Virginia the past two
plus years. She loved each of you and enjoyed being there.

Patterson II
Nov. 8, 1948 – June 6, 2015
Robert “Bob” Clifford Pat-
terson, 66, of Independence
died in Independence on
June 6.
He was born to Robert
“Pat” Clifford Patterson Sr.
and Ann
Rosella
(Hilde-
brand).
B o b
spent his
childhood
in Inde-
pendence
and attended Independence
Elementary School, Henry
Hill Middle School and grad-
uated from Central High
School in 1966. Bob married
the love of his life, Geraldine
“Jeri” Lynn, in 1968.
He was a dedicated and
hard worker at everything he
decided to do. He worked at
Marion County Public Works
Road Maintenance Depart-
ment as a community serv-
ice crew leader until 2013,
when he retired. He was well
respected by his crew and
work peers.
In his spare time, he
worked on his family’s prop-
erty recycling scrap metal
and was also a certified
welder.
Bob had a soft spot in his
heart for most animals, es-
pecially his dogs. He enjoyed
most all things to do with
the outdoors and enjoyed
the Oregon coast.
He was an avid hunter,
fisherman and gun enthusi-
ast. He was a lifetime mem-
ber of the NHRA, the North
American Hunting Club and
a pioneer license holder
from the Oregon Depart-
ment of Fish and Wildlife.
Bob loved to listen to a di-
verse selection of music and,
in general, just good ol’ clas-
sic country. He had a love for
Irish bagpipes.
He was an avid reader and
kept up on the latest trends
with guns. He also enjoyed
watching a variety of shows.
Bob was a dedicated pa-
triot and loved our great
country. He had very strong
love for our Troops and reg-
ularly exercised his right to
freedom of speech. He was a
fair man that wasn’t afraid to
speak up for what he felt
was right.
Survivors include his best
friend and loving wife of 46
years, Geraldine (Jeri) Lynn;
son, Robert Clifford Patter-
son III (Shannon) of South-
lake, Texas; daughter, Shan-
non Lee Ricketts (Dave); sis-
ter, Patty Reyes of Wapato,
Wash; and two grandchil-
dren.
Celebration to honor
Bob’s life will be held in July,
tentatively July 11, time and
place to be announced. In
lieu of flowers, the family
asks that you spend extra
time with your own family.

Elizabeth A. Weiss
April 2, 1933 – May 29, 2015
Elizabeth Ann Weiss, 82,
of Monmouth died May 29
in Monmouth.
She was born in Gary,
Ind., to parents Andrew J.
Kormos and Ida A. Juhasz.
She loved music from an
early age, especially the
piano. Elizabeth’s early mu-
sical training came from
Catholic nuns.
By age 12, she was playing
the organ
for Mass at
the Cathe-
dral of the
Ho l y A n -
gels in
Gary.
Eliza-
beth was
also fond of singing, equat-
ing it with happiness.
As her musical training
progressed, and much to her
delight, Elizabeth’s mother
was able to purchase her a
piano. She never looked
back.
She graduated from Ho-
race Mann High School in
Gary. She graduated from
Mount Mary College in Mil-
waukee, Wis., and continued
to study at Indiana Universi-
ty, receiving a master’s de-
gree from the School of
Music.
In 1959, Elizabeth mar-
ried her sweetheart, Donald
J. Weiss, at the Cathedral of
the Holy Angels.

Pat Tilgner passed away quietly on Jan. 4th of this year
and asked for no service. She said “If you want to, wait ‘til
later and have a party for me.” So with this thought we are
having a celebration of life and party for Pat. The 20th of
June is Pat’s birthday, so her celebration of life will be “Pat’s
Party” from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday June 20th at her home
of 52 years, 675 SW Church St. in Dallas
There will be food and drink.
Don moved to Monmouth,
where they made their fami-
ly home for 48 years.
First and foremost, she
shared her love of music
with her many piano stu-
dents. For a number of years
she was the musical director
and played the organ for St.
Patrick Catholic Church in
Independence and Christ’s
Church in Monmouth.
Elizabeth also enjoyed ac-
companying the Monmouth
Elementary School choir
over the years.
Elizabeth had a lifelong
intellectual curiosity; she
was eager to learn; and she
was an avid reader. She was
proud of her Hungarian her-
itage and enjoyed studying
its culture.
She enjoyed traveling, and
was fortunate enough to visit
Canada, Europe and Africa.
She enjoyed bargain hunting
and garage sales and spend-
ing time with friends in the
Monmouth Social Hour
Book Club.
She was preceded in
death by her husband of 52
years, Donald.
Survivors include her
daughter Kristin; sons, Karl,
Kurt and Erik; and six grand-
children.
Celebration of Elizabeth’s
life will be June 28 from 1:30
to 3:30 p.m. at Monmouth
Elementary School. A recep-
tion will follow at 493 Sacre
Lane, Monmouth.

96, of Salem died Monday in
Salem.
She was born in Sheridan,
Wyo.
