Class on living with
diabetes offered
A six-week workshop on
practical skills for living with
diabetes will be offered from
9 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays
beginning June 11 through
July 16 at the Flaming Med-
ical Center, 1000 SE Uglow
Ave., Dallas.
Self-management skills
taught include working with
your healthcare team, man-
aging symptoms and med-
ications, problem solving,
setting weekly goals, getting
support from family and
friends, and learning how to
be active and eat well. The
workshop is designed to
complement and enhance
medical treatment.
Class materials, including
a course book and CD, are
provided free of charge. The
class is also open to care
givers.

Local history buff
will speak in Indy
Join the Independence
Heritage Museum as local
collector of history, Gary
Richards, talks about World
War II at Camp Adair. The
talk will be at 7 p.m. on
Monday at the Independ-
ence Civic Center, 555 S.
Main St., Independence.
Richards is a retired con-
struction worker who spent
18 years in the Coast Range
town of Valsetz, and another
18 years at the printed cir-
cuit plant in Dallas. In 2009,
his wife gave him a global
positioning unit, which
started his interest in geo-
caching.
Geocaching at the old
Army camp north of Corval-
lis sparked his interest in the
history of the camp. He
began tracking down many
of the original buildings
from the camp.

Evans hosts small
business forum
Rep. Paul Evans (D) will
host a small business forum
for Willamette Valley small
businesses Monday from 6
to 7:30 p.m. at the Inde-
pendence Public Library,

Since taking office, Evans
has held monthly small
business forums throughout
House District 20.
The agenda will focus on
the dynamics of small busi-
ness innovation: upon the
structures and systems that
can provide small business-
es with the equipment, peo-

Registration for
STEP up to 4-H
Polk County 4-H will be
offering three STEP (Short
Term Education Program-
ming) up to 4-H classes this
month which will teach chil-
dren in grades four through
12 about making fiber from
fleece and cake decorating.
“Fleece to Fiber” class will
be Saturday from 10 a.m. to
noon. Students will learn
the differences between
sheep, alpaca, and rabbit
fibers and the process of
spinning fiber into thread.

Youth Group’s silent auction

Poppy sales will
benefit veterans
Small, red, paper poppies
will be sold by American Le-
gion Auxiliary Unit 20 from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday in
front of Walmart in Dallas.
The paper flowers are a
symbol of remembrance,
and are distributed for do-
nations around Memorial
and Veterans Day.
All proceeds go toward
veteran-based programs
such as the Wounded War-
rior Project and the Portland
Transplant Center.

Breakfast at the
Grange on Sunday
Buell Grange will host its
monthly second Sunday
Community Breakfast on
Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m.
Cost is $6 per person, and
the menu is scheduled to in-

Camp Mighty Oaks
begins on July 25
Camp Mighty Oaks be-
gins July 25. The camp helps
grieving kids and their fami-
lies.
Kids who have lost a loved
one attend with their fami-
ly/guardian and receive age-
appropriate services, partic-
ipate in healing activities,
feel normal among peers
who have gone through
similar circumstances and
honor and remember their
loved ones who have died.
Unique aspects of camp
include a live butterfly re-
lease honoring loved ones,
music therapy, support
groups, educational theater
performance, arts, crafts,
campfires and more.

Pentacle Theatre
staging comedies
Heather Toller is directing
a comedy double feature at
Pentacle Theatre running
through June 20.
First of the two one-act
plays is “God of Carnage,”
written by Yasmina Reza.
The satirical comedy is set
in modern-day New York
and tells the story of two
married couples who meet
for the first time after their
sons have a playground
fight.
Second on the bill is the
equally funny, if a little silli-
er, “The Book of Liz,” by
David Sedaris and Amy
Sedaris. Sister Elizabeth
Donderstock makes cheese-
balls to feed her entire reli-
gious community, but feel-
ing unappreciated, she de-
cides to leave to explore the
outside world.

City manager to
speak on Friday
Monmouth City Manager
Scott McClure will be speak-
ing and answering questions
at the Monmouth Senior
Community Center on dur-
ing a potluck on Friday. Fol-
lowing his talk, Amy Ringer-
ing and Tabitha Nida, both
Western Oregon University
graduates who worked for
Senior Services, will be shar-
ing information about the
services and adult protective
services. The potluck begins
at noon.

Local pub to host
Oregon IPA tasting
The Three Legged Dog, lo-
cated at 250 S. Main Street,
Independence, will host a
free Oregon IPA tasting on
Friday. The event is spon-
sored by the Oregon Beer
Growler. Tasting begins at 5
p.m.
Participants will judge
around 12 commercial IPAs.
Tasters do not have to be ex-
perts in judging. Partici-
pants’ opinions will decide
which beers will be featured
in the July edition of the Ore-
gon Beer Growler.

ages 21 and older.
