Improve memory
through workshop
Dr. Rob Winningham,
professor and chair of the
Behavioral Sciences Divi-
sion at Western Oregon Uni-
versity, will offer “Train your
brain: How we can maintain
or even improve our memo-
ry ability” from 2 to 4 p.m.
on Tuesday at the Werner
University Center, Columbia
Room.
Winningham will discuss
the latest research on brain
health. Participants may ex-
ercise their brains using tar-
geted activities.

Senior Center jam
set for Thursday
Dallas Area Seniors is
holding its “May Spectacu-
lar” music jam on Thursday
starting at 6 p.m. at the Dal-
las Senior Center, 955 SE Jef-
ferson.
All area singers, musi-
cians and entertainers are
welcome to come and play.
The performance lineup will
include audience favorites
Kermit Bail, Fred Hardin,
Ma r y Da w s o n , Jo h n n y
Leigh, Dick Riley, Carlot
Hall, Chris Cutler and host
Michele Campione and the
Notorious Leopard Chicks.
Audience participation is
welcome. Admission is free,

Join in YMCA Indy
pool clean-up
The Monmouth-Inde-
pendence YMCA will host a
volunteer clean-up day at
the Independence Heated
Pool, on I Street, Independ-
ence.
The clean-up is to get the
pool ready to open on June
6, but before that happens,
it needs cleaning, said
Natascha Cronin, YMCA di-
rector.
The clean-up will be from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Satur-
day. All are welcome to par-
ticipate.

coming parade in downtown Dallas on
Friday afternoon. People lined Main
Street to greet the soldiers who returned
home from deployment across the

M-I YMCA to host
free Saturday event
The Monmouth-Indepen-
dence YMCA will host a free
conference for parents,
caregivers and early child-
hood professionals from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at
Western Oregon University’s
Werner University Center.
Linda Craven will be the
keynote speaker, discussing
“Play is a Child’s Work: Every
Day Learning.”
The morning session,
from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.,
will focus on parenting skills
and early learning work-
shops in both English and
Spanish. Child care will be
provided free from 8 a.m.
until 12:30 p.m.
The afternoon session,
from 1 to 3 p.m., will include
family activities and oppor-
tunities to connect with re-
sources.

Art exhibit opening
at Tom Kunke Art
The Tom Kunke Art Stu-
dio, 357 Main St., Dallas, will
feature a “Iconic Willamette
Valley” exhibit opening Fri-
day and running through
June 27.
Several local artists will be
part of the exhibit, which re-
flects the diversity of beauty
experience in the Willamette
Valley.
Works include paintings
by Lori Beck, James Kirk,
Doyle Leek, Marilyn Krug
and Tom Kunke; pottery by
John Beck; glass by Chris
Martin; and metal by Tan-
glewood Studios.
The exhibit opens with a
“Meet the Artists” event
from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Reg-
ular exhibit hours are Thurs-
days and Fridays from 2 to 6
p.m. and Saturdays from 11
a.m. to 5 p.m.

focuses on future
Monmouth Engaged in-
vites Monmouth residents
to take part in an online sur-
vey to set a road map for the
future. The survey is spon-
