PEDEE NEWS
Corbin Sedlacek, a sev-
enth-grader from Luckia-
mute Valley Charter Schools’
Pedee campus, stopped by
the Women’s Club last
Wednesday to interview
members about an un-
named creek by Maple
Grove Road that his class is
studying and trying to name.
He asked us how long we’ve
lived in the neighborhood —
Marguerite (McBeth) Nice
lived here as a girl; LaVerne
Bennett has been here since
she was born (75 years last

h a s b e e n h e re f o r 7 7
years! I’m the newbie at 35
years. We all had sugges-
tions, which he and his
classmates will explore.
Corbin is an impressive guy.
—
Dorothy McBeth was sur-
prised when her whole fami-
ly arrived at her church in
Falls City on Mother’s Day.
Afterward they all went to
son Darrel and Shirley’s
house for a barbecue. In ad-
dition to Darrel and Shirley,
son Sam and daughter
Sandy were there with their
families, including seven
grandchildren, nine great-
grandchildren, several great
-grand girlfriends, and rela-
tives Mel and Marguerite
Nice from McMinnville and
Connie Ames and daughter
Renee Dukes from Dallas.
Sam showed up on his John
Deere tractor. The kids all
loved bottle feeding
Dorothy’s new calf.

Bert and Doris Bodin had
a grand time on a cruise
through the Panama Canal.
They started out in Ft. Laud-
erdale, Fla., then went on to
Cartagena, Columbia, and
through the Panama Canal,
then back up through Costa
MI TOWN
This past weekend was
like spring cleaning on
steroids, and MI Town’s col-
lective community energy
was hard at work clearing
away debris from the parks
and river and neighbor-
hoods. What a difference it
makes to our backyards and
garages when old and unus-
able items can be dropped
off for disposal. Our streets
and neighborhoods look so
much better without them.
The community cleanup at
Riverview Park in Independ-
ence was in conjunction
with the SOLVE Oregon
sponsored-activity. This is a
nonprofit organization that
works with government and
volunteer groups statewide.
Special thanks to Umpqua
Bank for sponsoring the
shredding service, where we
were able to shred personal
documents and other pa-

pers, and to all who worked
hard to make this event go
so well. The pizza lunch was
definitely appreciated by the
hard working volunteers.
When our communities
work together, so many
good things can be accom-
plished.
—
Polk County Public Works
personnel were busy taking
many of the items such as
paints, pesticides, auto
products, etc., that people
weren’t able to dispose of at
Riverview Park. Now we can
get ready for summertime
with clean garages and
yards, thanks to these pro-
grams.
—
Tuesday’s elections are in
the rearview mirror now, so
we will have time to reflect
upon the choices we made
regarding the ballot meas-
ure. Letters from our neigh-
bors that are printed on the
editorial page have given us
all thoughts to ponder; and
the sharing of ideas —
whether we agree or not —
are always interesting. It’s
good to take a look at all
sides of any issue before
making a conscious deci-
sion to vote on issues or for
candidates for elected of-
fice.
—
This is National Public
Works week (May 17-23) and
it gives us an opportunity to
take time to think about
how many good and posi-
tive things happen in MI
Town because of the hard
work and diligence of our
public workers. It’s comfort-
ing to know that our lights
are on when we simply flip a
switch on the wall; the water
is there at the turn of a
faucet; our streets and side-
walks are in good shape; and
the streetlights help to keep
us safe during the evening.
I’m especially grateful for
wonderful libraries and
beautiful parks — and for all
the people who help keep
them that way.
—
Speaking of libraries …
everyone at both Mon-
mouth and Independence
libraries are gearing up for
the summer reading pro-
grams, for readers — and lis-
teners — of all ages. Stop by
your library.
Rica and Guatemala. They
then visited Puerta Vallarta
and Cabo San Lucas in Mex-
ico, and toured San Diego
before coming home. All
that in 15 days!
—
Derek Burbank, son of
Dave and Suzanne Burbank,
signed a contract with the
Culver School District last
week to teach agriculture
science. Culver is near Red-
mond in central Oregon.
He’s happy about that since
his fiancé, Ashley Grucza,
works in Redmond. He will
be completing his master’s
degree in June and happy to
be out of school after 18
years.
—
Patrick Clark came down
to Pedee on May 10, to take
his mother June Clark and
grandmother Betty Forry to
McGrath’s in Corvallis for
Mother’s Day. He also
brought See’s candy, a per-
petual choice at the
Forry/Clark household. He
and a friend were two of the
hundreds participating in
the Oregon 500 motorcycle
run on May 9. They went
from Beaverton to Sweet
Home, Sisters, Prineville
Reservoir, Tigh Valley and
back to Beaverton.
—
A new Nar-Anon group
will be meeting at the Pedee
Church once a week. They
will meet on Sunday
evenings from 5 to 6 p.m.
starting on May 31, and will
focus on offering support to
family and friends of people
affected by addiction. Call
coordinator Jody at 503-
838-0260 for more informa-
tion.
