Golfer gets gift of new shoes DSD budget will
include K-3 music

When Central High School
junior Trevor Whittemore
took the phone call, he
couldn’t believe his ears.
Whittemore, a member of
Central’s golf team, had not
quite been expecting a call
— more like hoping for one.
He lost his Nike Tiger
Woods golf shoes at Oak
Knoll Golf Course after prac-
tice a few weeks ago.
“I just left them outside a
friend’s car because I’m a
teenager and was just think-
ing about going home,” he
said Thursday.
He placed signs around
the course asking if anyone
found them to call him.
In the meantime, Whitte-
more has been paying for
his absence of mind, by hav-
ing to split the cost of less
expensive golf shoes with his
parents — and in the blisters
the not-up-to-par footwear
caused.
“It wasn’t fun,” Whitte-
more said, grimacing.
Well, no one found the
shoes, but Dallas resident
Kim Cornthwaite saw his
signs.
She asked her husband,
Carl, to go to the course’s pro
shop to make sure the sign
wasn’t a fraud.
“Once she found it was for
real, she was on it like a
bloodhound,” Carl said, with
a knowing smile.
Kim, a Central graduate,
ordered the latest version of
the shoes — in Panther red
and black — and called
Whittemore to say they were
on their way.
“I like to help the kids,”

fore his team’s practice,.
The excited Whittemore
immediately tried them on,
quickly casting aside his
other pair.
The new shoes were a
perfect fit and brought a big
grin to his face.
Whittemore jumped up
and thanked Kim, who he
had not met before Thurs-
day. He promised to keep in
touch and tell her about his
golf game.
Standing in the pro shop
in his new shoes, Whitte-
more still seemed in a little
disbelief that a stranger gave
him such a gift.
“It shows there are still
good people in the world,”
he said.

DALLAS — The Dallas
School District’s proposed
2015-16 budget will in-
clude full-day kinder-
garten, music at Lyle and
Oakdale elementary
schools, and additional
staff and technology.
The district’s total budg-
et is about $49 million, in-
cluding $9.4 million in
maintenance bond pro-
ceeds. The district’s general
fund is about $32.2 million,
about $3 million more than
in the current budget.
Of that increase,
$869,000 is because a new
charter school, Dallas
Community School, is
planning to open in the
fall. About $713,000, or 80
percent, of that funding
will be passed on to the
charter school.
Along with offering full-
day kindergarten, the Dal-
las two K-3 schools will
now offer 30 minutes per
week of music instruction.
Also included in the budget
is increased time for the
school psychologist, an ad-
ditional language arts

About $463,000 will be
held in reserve due to the
state providing funding on
a 50-50 split over the two
years of the biennium. In
the past, the state school
funding was given to dis-
tricts on a 49-51 split to ac-
count for increased costs in
the second year.
“Tami (Montague, Dal-
las’ business manager) has
done within the budget
what the legislature has
done in the past,” said In-
terim Superintendent Den-
nis Engle.
Engle added the budget
will include the continua-
tion of electives at LaCreole
Middle School, which re-
turned in the current
school year.
“I think every single staff
member at LaCreole (Mid-
dle School) will say the
electives have made a big
difference this year,” Engle
said. “Kids are happier,
they get to try new things
every day. They just like
school more.”
