PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP Dallas earns league victory Itemizer-Observer staff report LEBANON — The Dallas baseball team opened Mid- Willamette Conference play with a 6-1 victory over Lebanon on Monday. Pitcher Tucker Weaver earned the victory for the Dragons. Weaver threw a complete game, giving up two hits and one walk, while throw- ing 12 strikeouts. Dallas lost to Hillsboro 5-2 on March 24 and split a pair of road games on Friday. The Dragons (3-3 overall, 1-0 MWC) defeat- ed Mountain View 7-5 be- fore losing to Ridgeview 6- 1 to close out the team’s nonleague season. Dallas hosts the War- riors Wednesday (today) at 4:30 p.m. before finishing the teams’ three-game se- ries Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Lebanon. CENTRAL OPENS LEAGUE PLAY: Central’s baseball team returned to the diamond to open Mid-Willamette Confer- ence play Tuesday after press time. The Panthers played at Woodburn. Central hosts the Bulldogs Wednesday (today) at 4:30 p.m. before finishing the three-game series at Woodburn on Friday. The Pan- thers went 2-1 in nonleague play. SPORTS BRIEFS Dallas bowling takes third at state DALLAS — Dallas High’s boys bowling team placed third at the 26th Annual Bowling Championships on Feb. 21-22 in Salem. The squad consisted of Josh Biery, Cameron Gumpinger, Jor- dyn Leep, Mason Maddox, Nick Otto, Jason Vohland, head coach Loren Faxon and assistant coaches Sandra Ledbetter and Melinda Cutler. The Dragons placed third out of 16 teams competing. Cadwallader earns weekly honor MONMOUTH — Western Oregon sopho- more Sammi Cadwallader was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Cadwallader helped lead the WOU soft- ball squad to the Consolation title at the Tournament of Champions in California. Cadwallader earned a win against San Francisco State and threw four scoreless in- nings in relief against Academy of Art in the consolation title game. She finished the Cadwallader week with a 1.72 ERA in 20.1 innings of work. Cadwallader has appeared in 12 games with six starts and a 3.89 ERA this season. Junior named Newcomer of the Year MONMOUTH — Western Oregon junior transfer Badane Sultessa earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Male New- comer of the Year award on March 24. Sultes- sa emerged as a leader for the WOU track and field team. He finished fourth in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships in 1 minute, 51.36 seconds. Sultessa Lindsey Butterworth of Simon Fraser earned Female Newcomer of the Year honors. Michael Friess of Alaska Anchorage and Karl Lerum of Seattle Pacific were named Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year, re- spectively.
