Spring Teaser
Public safety levy supporters to meet
DALLAS — Those wanting to find out more about the cam-
paign supporting the Polk County public safety levy can attend
a meeting of the Friends and Neighbors for a Safe and Prosper-
ous Community political action committee Thursday.
The meeting will take place at Pressed Wine and Coffee Bar,
788 Main St., Dallas, at 7 p.m.
Last month, the Polk County Board of Commissioner placed a
45 cents per $1,000 of assessed value property tax levy on the
May 19 ballot. The levy is projected to restore 22 full-time equiv-
alent positions in the Polk County Sheriff’s Office patrol and jail
division and the Polk County District Attorney’s Office. In addi-
tion, the Juvenile Department will be able to rent two more ju-
venile detention beds and Community Corrections will be able
to provide more managers for community service crews.

Delays expected along Highway 18
GRAND RONDE — Travelers may experience delays on a 10-
mile stretch of Highway 18 in the H.B. Van Duzer State Scenic
Corridor that includes part of northwestern Polk County while
crews remove unhealthy trees.
Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will be work-
ing under an agreement with Oregon Parks and Recreation De-
partment (OPRD) on the three-day project, to begin Tuesday
and continue Feb. 25-26, weather permitting. The tree removal
will occur during daylight hours, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
ODOT crews will cut down dead trees that pose a threat to
traffic along sections of the highway from milepost 8.5 in Lin-
coln County to milepost 19 near Grand Ronde in Polk County.
Most trees will be left where they fall to decompose naturally.
When crews cut trees that could fall on the road, the highway
will be closed in both directions for a short time. After crews
safely remove those trees, flaggers and a pilot car will control
traffic through the area. Travelers should plan on delays of no
longer than 20 minutes.
Arts group wants to hear from you
MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Arts and Culture Commis-
sion wants to hear from residents about their interests in local
performances, art exhibits and classes.
A short survey is available online to let the city know what
kind of art interests you. The survey does request contact infor-
mation to add respondents to an email list.

‘Family Weekend’ slated at WOU

families will converge on
Western Oregon University’s
campus Friday through Sun-
day for WOU’s Family Week-
end Getaway.
The event, which kicks off
Friday with registration at 5
p.m. at the Werner University
Center, is not just for stu-
dents, but open to all in the
WOU family: current stu-
dents, former students,
those with children attend-
ing, and local community
partners.
Participants are encour-
age to grab dinner in down-
town Monmouth or Inde-
pendence before the wel-
come reception by WOU
President Mark Weiss.
Entertainment will be pro-
vided by Jonny Zavant, men-
talist, at 8 p.m. on Friday in
the Werner University Cen-
ter’s Pacific Room.
Saturday’s agenda is
packed with exercise op-
tions, brunch and the annual
look-alike competition to see
who has the closest resem-
blance to siblings, parents or
even their roommates.
Participants in the family
weekend will have a chance
to catch a basketball game
between the nationally-
ranked Wolves and Simon
Fraser on Saturday at 4 p.m.
before enjoying discounted
movie ticket prices at Inde-
pendence Cinema.
Other events available for
families at WOU include par-
ticipating in a blood dona-
tion event Saturday from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m. and geo-
caching around campus.
