series kicks off
A Great Week To Be A Dragon
A series of discussions to
celebrate Lent are scheduled
for the next six Wednesdays
beginning today at 2:30 p.m.
in the Activities Room at
Dallas Retirement Village,

Discussion dates and sub-
jects for the theme, “spiritual
greats,” are: Feb. 18, Saint Au-
gustine; Feb. 25, Saint Francis
of Assisi; March 4, Julian of
Norwich; March 11, John
Wesley; March 18, Dietrich
Bonhoeffer; and March 25,
Mother Teresa. The discus-
sions will be led by the Rev.
Dr. George Furniss of First

Polk County-Oregon State
University Extension Service is
offering two classes for youths
in grades 4-12 this week as
part of its STEP program.
On Thursday from 5:30 to 7
p.m., “Horticulture — Fun
With Dried Flowers” will be of-
fered. Cost is $3 for 4-H mem-
bers, $5 for nonmembers.
On Saturday from 1:30 to
3:30 p.m., professional pho-
tographer Miriam Haugen
will lead a class on “Photog-
raphy — Improving Compo-
sition and Selecting Your Top
Photos.”

Driver safety class
slated for Saturday
A one-day AARP Defen-
sive Driving Safety Class will
be offered Saturday at the
Monmouth Senior Center.
The class meets from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. at 180 S. War-
ren St. It will cover defensive
driving, driving techniques
and discuss new laws re-
cently passed.
Preregistration is required.
Cost is $15 for AARP mem-

presentations are scheduled,

auction.

Relay For Life sets
vendor fair benefit
American Cancer Society
Relay For Life of Polk County
wants to “Give Cancer the
Boot” and is hosting a com-
munity vendor fair fundraiser
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. at The Majestic in Dallas.
A variety of vendors will be
selling products to shoppers,
with the vendors contribut-
ing funds to support this
year’s relay. There will be an
opportunity to learn more
about Relay For Life and how
to be part of the effort to find
a cure for cancer. There also
will be sign-ups for prize
drawings throughout the fair.
In addition to vendors,
there will also be Relay reams
raising funds during the fair.

Author will discuss
Oregon during war
The Polk County Museum
will host John Baker as he
examines Oregon during
World War II as both a war-
front and a home front.
Baker will talk about how
Oregon was attacked during
World War II, and how those
who lived in the state pro-
duced materials necessary
for the war.

slated on Saturday
Fostering Hope Initiative,
a Salem-based organization
supporting vulnerable chil-
dren and families, is hosting
a free baby shower for new
moms in Polk County.
The shower is Saturday at
2 p.m. at a location in Dallas
that will be disclosed when
moms RSVP by Friday.
Free gifts — including
baby clothes, toys and dia-
pers — are available when

Gallery set to host
reading on Sunday
Wild Women, Recite! will
hold its 14th annual reading
of poetry Sunday at River
Gallery, 184 S. Main St., In-
dependence.
The event, hosted by Airlie
Press and River Gallery, be-

It will feature Karen
McPherson, professor of
French at the University of
Oregon, and Melissa Maden-
ski, a teacher and Oregon
Literary Arts Fellowship re-
cipient. Both are published
authors. An open-mic ses-
sion will follow.
