Ricardo Trevino
Marie S. Barnhart
Oct. 11, 1951 – Jan. 30, 2015
April 17, 1937 – Jan. 29, 2015
Ricardo Trevino, 63, of
Salem, formerly of Inde-
pendence, died Jan. 30.
He was born in Robstown,
Texas, to Victoria and Luis
Trevino.
His family migrated to In-
depend-
ence in
1961. Ri-
c a r d o
worked the
fields every
day to help
support his
family. He
graduated
from Cen-
tral High
School in
1971. It was
at Central
that he met his best friend
and future bride, Gloria.
After graduating, Ricardo
served his country as a sol-
dier in the Army in Germany
during the Vietnam War.
When his tour was complete,
he returned home to marry
his high school sweetheart.
Ricardo and Gloria were
married on July 13, 1974, at
St. Patrick Catholic Church
in Independence.
The couple moved in 1975
to Salem, where they lived
the rest of their years togeth-
er. That same year, Ricardo
began working for the state
of Oregon; Ricardo retired in
2006 after 31 years.
During his life, he enjoyed
traveling with his family,
spending time working on
his yard, watching funny
movies, barbecuing and
camping. Those who knew
him will remember him as a
caring person and devoted
Dallas Cowboys fan.
Survivors include his wife
of 40 years, Gloria; mother,
Victoria; sons, Andy and
Michael; brothers, Luis, Oscar,
Enrique and Armando; sister,
Olga; and two grandchildren.
Service was Friday at St.
Patrick Catholic Church in
Independence.
In lieu of flowers or contri-
bution, his sons ask that if

with your father, grandfa-
ther, son or husband.

Marie S. Barnhart, 77, of
Monmouth died Jan. 29 in
Salem.
She was born in Klamath
Falls to Howard Dayton
Barnhart and Vera Mae
Seeds Barnhart.
Marie had been in the
care of
Par tner-
ships in
Commu-
nity Living
Inc. (PCL)
for many
years and
loved her
job doing
the mail run.
She loved the beach, cof-
fee and long car rides. Marie
will be remembered for her
unforgettable laugh, her
mischievous nature and her
enjoyment of the simple
things in life.
She is survived by her twin
sister, Mary of Springfield.
Celebration of life was
Tuesday at the PCL office in
Monmouth.

Jeanne Mary Gotts
Feb. 25, 1928 – Feb. 5, 2015
Jeanne Mary Gotts, 86, of
Dallas died Thursday.
She was born in Waterbury,
Conn., to Hugh and Hazel.
She spent most of her
g r ow i n g -
up years
between
Connecti-
cut and
Florida.
She loved
the theater
and was
trained as
a ballerina. She also enjoyed
taking flying lessons, and se-
cretly aspired to be a com-
mercial airline pilot.
While working at an opti-
cian’s office in St. Petersburg,
Fla., she met her future hus-
band, Warren E. Gotts. They
were married on Nov. 22,
1951, in San Diego. They
raised their family in Valinda,
Calif., before retiring to
Salem in 1987. Warren died
ROBERT EDWARD SCHARF
January 16, 1919 - February 7, 2015
Bob Scharf, age 96, the son of John Ed-
ward (E.J.) and Ruth Scharf, was born in
Salem, Oregon. He lived near Eldridge,
and after graduation from the 8th grade
in 1933, his family moved to the “home
place” farm, 1½ miles east of Perrydale.
He had a sister Dorothy, and a brother
Kenneth, also known as Swede. Bob
graduated from Perrydale High School in
1937, the only one in his class.
Like his father before him, Bob chose
farming as his occupation. On November 18, 1945 he married
Alda Miller and they began a life tied to agriculture, on a farm
they purchased west of Perrydale. In 1961, Bob and Alda
started buying farm land in Sherman County, and the last few
years he enjoyed trips to eastern Oregon to see the crops.
He was very involved in soil and water conservation, was a
life member of Elks, past president of the Valley Wheat Grow-
ers, a member of the Saturday Night Pinochle club, 20-40
Young Farmers club, Polk County Livestock Assoc., and the
Rickreall Farm Supply Board of Directors. He was an hon-
orary FFA Chapter Farmer and Honorary FFA American
Farmer. He received the OSU Diamond Pioneer award for
his contribution to agriculture.
After retiring from farming, Bob and Alda took more time
to travel, visiting all 50 states and many countries around the
world. They were long time members of the Trail Duster
chapter of Good Sam, and many of their trips were done in
their motor home.
Bob started working on a combine when he was 10 years
old, and was still driving his beloved vintage John Deere trac-
tors from his collection at the age of 95.
Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alda; his children
John Scharf (wife Charlotte), Jay Scharf and Pam Scharf; two
grandsons, Jason (Anna) Scharf and Justin (Sarah) Scharf; and
four great grandchildren, Robert, Megan, Garrett & Grady;
all of Perrydale.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, February 13, at
1:30 p.m. at Amity Christian Church, 1305 Goucher Street,
Amity.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the
Yamhill Valley Heritage Center or Hospice.

her daughter.
She loved spending time
with her family, traveling and
having adventures, and tak-
ing care of her cats and dog.
She enjoyed a good game of
Mexican Train, where she was
very good at cheating. Read-
ing, watching TV, sewing and
knitting were some of her
quieter past times.
She was preceded in
death by her daughter, Kris-
tine Gotts, in 2002.
Survivors include her sons,
Hugh (Sharon) Gotts and Jim
(Adele) Gotts, all of Califor-
nia, and Patrick (Annki) Gotts
of Sweden; daughter, Kath-
leen (Rick) Woodin of Dallas;
and eight grandchildren.
Memorial service was Sun-
day at Dallas Mortuary Trib-
ute Center. Private interment
was at City View Cemetery.

Jerry Lee Flug
April 18, 1936 – Jan. 21, 2015
Jerry Lee Flug, 78, longtime
Monmouth resident, died Jan.
21 in Clackamas following a
long battle with Alzheimer’s.
He was born in Watertown,
S.D., to Jack and Agnes Flug.
Jerry graduated from
Reedsport High School,
where he competed in foot-
ball, basketball and baseball.
After high
school,
Jerry enlist-
ed in the
U . S . Ma -
rine Corps
and served four years before
being honorably discharged.
Jerry then attended Oregon
College of Education, now
Western Oregon University,
where he played football and
graduated with a Bachelor of
Science in criminal justice.
Jerry married Shirlee
Wilcox on Aug. 13, 1962, in
Stevenson, Wash. They lived
in Independence before set-
tling in Monmouth.
He had worked for the
Oregon Department of Cor-
rections as a state parole and
probations officer for 30
years. He retired in 1991.
Jerry loved the great out-
doors. He was an avid fisher-
man, duck hunter and
camper. Jerry spent many
happy summers at the Eu-
gene Yacht Club on Fern
Ridge Reservoir water skiing,
sailing and enjoying the
company of his family and
friends. Jerry’s greatest thrill
was getting the opportunity
to spend time with his three
grandsons snow skiing, water
skiing, sailing, fishing and
watching them play sports.
Survivors include his wife,
Shirlee of Portland; son, Jack
Flug of Portland; daughter,
Marcie (Tim) Colahan of
Burns; and three grandsons.
Celebration of Jerry’s life is
being planned for this sum-
mer.

Shawn Michael
Howard
Sept. 6, 1973 – Jan. 31, 2015
Shawn Michael Howard,
41, of Lake Oswego, formerly
of Dallas, died Jan. 31.
He was born in Salem to
Jack and Jeannine Howard.
Shawn attended schools
in Dallas and graduated
from Dallas High School in
1991. He
attended
Oregon
State Uni-
versity and
graduated
from there.
He then
attended
culinary
school in Portland and was a
talented chef.
During culinary school,
Shawn worked at Elephant’s
Delicatessen and then
worked as a chef at Intel. He
then worked for Weiden &
Kennedy in Portland, Gar-
ve y – S c h u b e r t & Ba re r,
Perkins Coie, and Auto Desk.
Shawn later worked for the
next three years operating a
mobile notary service. At the
time of his death he was
working at Banfield Pet Hos-
pital’s corporate office as the
senior facilities coordinator.
Shawn loved cooking, so-
cial media and music. He
was an animal lover and had
two cats and a parrot.
Shawn had a great sense of
humor and loved to laugh.

ly and friends.
Survivors include his
mother, Jeannine Howard; fa-
ther, Jack Howard; sister,
Michelle Howard; brother, Jeff
Howard; and extended family.
Celebration of Shawn’s life
is Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trini-
ty Lutheran Church in Dallas.

Gene Lavon
Arehart
April 16, 1942 – Feb. 3, 2015
Gene Lavon Arehart, 72,
of Dallas died Feb. 3 in Mo-
lalla.
He was born in Lebanon
to Jesse Edward and Fay Ila

High School and entered the
Army shortly thereafter. He
served until 1962 and held
decorations as a sharpshooter
and marksman.
He married Sharon Eloise
Cochran in Gladstone on
Nov. 16, 1963.
Gene graduated from Mt.
Hood Community College in
Gresham with an associate
degree in funeral service. He
worked as a mortician for
many years, first in the funer-
al home of his in-laws,
Cochran Sunset Chapel in
Gladstone. He went on to
work for Everhart and Kent
Funeral Home in Canby,
Golden’s Funeral Service in
Salem for more than 10 years,
and for a short time at Boll-
man Funeral Home in Dallas.
He was a past president of
the Lions and Jaycee clubs
and was a past member of
the Elks Lodge and American
Legion. He enjoyed hunting
and deep sea fishing.
Survivors include his wife,
Sharon of Dallas; daughters,
Karrie ( James) Layne of
Salem, Wendie Nygren of
Dallas and Erica (Ryan)
Prentice of Missoula, Mont.;
brother, Gary of La Pine; and
eight grandchildren.
Private family service will
be held with private inter-
ment with military honors at
Willamette National Ceme-
tery in Portland.

Russell “Coon” Raymond
Henry Jr., 86, longtime resi-
dent of the Dallas area, died
Jan. 30 in Salem.
He was born in Toledo to
Russell and
Virginia
Henry.

graduated
from high
school, and
worked in
logging
and with
heavy equipment for most of
his adult life. He also had
raised raccoons. After retire-
ment, he moved to Salem,
where he lived until his death.
Celebration of Coon’s life
is Thursday at 1 p.m. at How-
ell, Edwards, Doerksen Fu-
neral Home in Salem. A re-

Cook

Billie Patricia Cook, 67,
longtime Dallas resident,
died Fri-
day.
She was
born in
Salem.
Billie
had spent

a waitress at various places
around town. She loved get-
ting to know her customers.
Survivors include her hus-
band, Stephen Cook; sons,
Dennis, Troy and Steve

Fields and Marilyn Danken-
bring; brother, Robert Dean;

Nellie Newland
Bitzer
Dec. 31, 1914 – Feb. 4, 2015
Nellie Newland Bitzer,
100, formerly of Dallas and
Falls City, died Feb. 4 in
Gladstone.
She was born in Neosha
County, Kan., to Charles and
Carolyn Chard.
Nellie married George W.
Newland on April 18, 1931, in
Girard,
Kan. They
came west
in 1937 in a
1929 Ford
Model-A
p a n e l .
They set-
tled on
Canyon
Road (Oakdale Road) outside
of Dallas. They moved to Falls
City in 1940 and returned to
Dallas in 1968. George died in
September 1983.
Nellie was always helping
others. She turned her home
into an adult foster care
home, where she and George
cared for others. She also
raised foster children. Nellie
hosted many parties at her
home, where her children
and their friends and parents
would come over and have a
taffy pull, and play Monopoly
or Hangman.
Nellie was a member of the
Falls City Seventh-day Adven-
tist Church. She and her fam-
ily helped clean and care for
the church for many years.
Nellie later married Her-
bert Bitzer on Dec. 2, 1989,
in Chico, Calif. They lived in
Ceres, Calif., for some time.
Herbert died on Jan. 25,
2002. Nellie had resided in
Gladstone until her death.
Survivors include her chil-
dren, Gene Newland and
John Newland, both of Dallas,
Stan Newland of Newberg,
Russell Newland of Luray, Va.,
Dorothy Skeers of Pleasant
Hill and Louise Clark of Gra-
ham, Texas; 15 grandchildren;
32 great-grandchildren; 26
great-great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-great-
grandchildren.
Private family burial will
be at Restlawn Memory Gar-
dens in Salem.
