Cities keep more funds in MINET’s operations

MONMOUTH — Mon-
mouth-Independence Net-
work (MINET) General Man-
ager Don Patten was pre-
pared to pay $618,000 toward
the debt incurred by the two
cities to build the network.
The board of directors —
comprised of both city man-
agers and a city councilor
and citizen from each com-
munity — only required the
data company pay $392,306.
Instead, Independence
paid $176,182 out of its
water fund and Monmouth
paid $216,123 out of Mon-
mouth Power and Light. The
utility funds were used to
take out the loans — and to
refinance those loans — to
build MINET.
Monmouth and Inde-
pendence completed a
major debt refinancing of
MINET in 2010, with the
towns pledging “full faith
and credit” on payments the
system can’t cover.
The decision was based
off recommendations from
the finance committee. If
MINET paid the available
$618,000, it would have min-
imal resources to operate.
Having more money avail-
able will help with infra-
structure and emergencies,
such as when a wind storm
knocked down cables, caus-
ing outages.
Patten said at Thursday’s
MINET board of directors
meeting the company plans
to grow in data, cable and
telephone service in the next
30 months.
“We have 7,650 addresses
available to us,” he said. “In
data, we have about 55 per-
cent of that. In the next 30
months, we think we can ac-
quire a 25 percent increase
on data.”
One way MINET will in-
crease penetration rates in
Monmouth and Independ-
ence — the communities the
network company serves —
is through public perception.
Though no firm decisions
on how MINET will improve
public perception was decid-
ed at Thursday’s meeting,
some things that were dis-
cussed include minimizing
the roll of MINET Man — a
cartoon mascot — and pro-
viding faster speeds.
