Rookie: Monmouth’s Evans
sworn into office on Monday
Continued from Page 1A
His second and third pri-
ority would be to provide
local exemptions to Meas-
ure 5, which limits property
taxes to $10 per $1,000 of as-
sessed value. His idea is to
allow local communities the
ability to approve bonds
and levies for specific local
investments that would
make property taxes exceed
Measure 5’s caps.
“I don’t believe in the
same cookie cutter ap-
proach across the state, and
if a community says they
don’t want to pay more in
taxes for this service, that
should be their right,” Evans
said. “But I want to give
them the tools. I want to
make sure local govern-
ments have the tools they
need to succeed.”
Evans was sworn in and
officially began his first Leg-
islative session representing
District 20, whose bound-

taken with him all over the world, military service coins,
a folded American flag and a collection of books.
aries include most of Mon-
mouth, Independence and
West Salem, on Monday. He
replaces longtime State Rep.
Vicki Berger of West Salem,
who retired.
Polk County’s other new
face at the State Capitol,
District 23 Rep. Mike Near-
man, did not return several
attempts via phone and
email to contact him for this
story. He was not in his
Capitol office on Friday.
Flu: Vaccination still being
suggested for most people
Continued from Page 1A
Hillebrand said the num-
ber of people showing flu-
like symptoms — fever of
100 degrees or higher,
cough or sore throat —
began increasing around
Christmas. If that trend
holds and patterns follow
previous years, Oregon may
catch up to states with a
high level of cases.
“If the rest of the country
is (trending high), we proba-
bly will get there too, but that
remains to be seen,” he said.
So far this season, 10
cases of the flu were identi-
fied at West Valley Hospital
in Dallas and more than 100
cases were reported in the
West Salem area. Increased
flu activity prompted West
Valley’s parent company,
Salem Health, to limit visita-
tion to West Valley and
Salem Hospital to protect
patients, starting Jan. 2.
With the risk of contract-
ing the virus still very possi-
ble, Hillebrand recom-
mends precautions.
“The biggest message is
for people to continue to do
all those things we like to
see them do to prevent the
spread of the flu,” he said.
That includes covering
coughs and sneezes, proper
hand washing, and avoiding
those who are ill. Staying
home from work or school, if
possible, is recommended if
you are experiencing flu
symptoms. Even those who
don’t feel seriously ill should
take precautions around peo-
ple who may be more at risk.
“The flu is sort of a hitch-
hiker,” Hillebrand said.
“They can still spread the
virus to others.”
Due to the late emer-
gence of flu strain H3N2 —
the virus causing much of
the trouble — flu vaccines
may not be as effective.
Hillebrand still recom-
mends getting vaccinated,
especially for young chil-
dren, those older than 65,
and those with compro-
mised immune systems.
Hillebrand did note peo-
ple testing positive for the
virus aren’t just the very
young or older people, but
range across all ages.
He added that if people
see a doctor soon enough
(typically within 24 hours of
the onset of symptoms), an-
tiviral medication can be
prescribed to treat the flu.
You Can Help
Prevent the spread
of flu by doing the fol-
lowing:
• Cover your nose and
mouth with a tissue or

Whites: Dental issues can
disrupt education process
Continued from Page 14A
She said those without in-
surance or adequate cover-
age could explore options
on the Oregon Health Plan
or coverage through the Af-
fordable Care Act.
Comerford contacted
Tigard-based Medical Teams
International and was sent a
packet of information on
how to organize a screening
and dental van. She then re-
cruited a local dentist,
Matthew Woolsey from Dal-
las, to provide donated den-
tal work for referred stu-
dents and community
members on Friday.
She collected donations
to pay for the van, and the
Perrydale Service Integra-
tion Team — a partnership
between Polk County, the
school district and local
agencies who coordinate to
provide resources to families
and individuals in need —
stepped in to pay for the re-
mainder.
Thursday, a group of vol-
unteers performed the
screenings and made refer-
rals when necessary.
The screenings, which
began at 1 p.m. with pre-
school students, were very
basic. Volunteers just shined
a flashlight in the mouths of
each child to look for cavi-
ties and other issues — and
later in the day, those com-
munity members who
showed up — and asked
them a few questions about
their brushing habits.
“Do you brush your teeth
every day?” Comerford
asked each of the students

School. Only a few students needed dental work.
she screened.
Depending on their an-
swers, she gave them a
“Good job!” or “You really
should brush every day.”
For the most part, the
kids passed the checkups,
but even finding the hand-
ful of children who did need
dental work helps.
“I’ve always been of the
belief that if students have
medical or dental issues, it’s
going to disrupt the educa-
tion process, so whenever
you can fulfill a need, it’s a
great opportunity,” said Per-
rydale Superintendent Eric
Milburn.
Milburn credited Comer-
ford’s hard work with bring-
ing the dental van to Perry-
dale.
“She did a great job of
providing this,” he said.
Thursday, only about a
dozen community mem-
bers attended the screening,
but Friday’s dental van will
be booked with 10 to 12 pa-
tients, students and com-
munity members. During
the hours open to the pub-
lic, Cover Oregon and Polk
County Family and Com-
munity Outreach represen-
tatives, as well as retired
Dallas School District em-
ployees, were on hand to as-
sist people with finding re-
sources.

would like to organize at
least one screening and
dental van each year and
hopes that Thursday’s ini-
tial screening will help get
the word out to bring more
people in next year.
“There are people who
live on the outskirts of the
city limits who have trouble
just even getting screened
or knowing that some of
those services are available,”
she said.
