——- I ÖÖÄtsTiAR * year a handsome increase for home and foreign missions, education, church erection, ami the freemen. The contribution for the Tatter O d - ject remains small, however, being only 884,012. The only cause for ■which contributions have actually decreased has been for the Board of Publication ; and there we have no fault to find. According to these statements the decrease of infant baptism during the last year has been 1,298, *' a smaller number than for at least six year previously, except TgM^Ko~"miich for’ dng~~bf~1h6 largest and most influential religi ous bodies in the United States. Infant baptism is also, we think, on the decrease in the same ratio among all the denominations who practice it. This is certainly en couraging to those who contend for pure apostolic Christianity. The only astonishing feature is that a ---- practice for which there is neither precept, tx ample nor logical infer ence in all the Bible should ever have found advocates among a thinking people. But we rejoice to know that its reign is of short duration, and that sooner or later, infant baptism must go. ♦ P rotestantism D ead .—The C< i th - olic Sentinel prints an article from the Western Watchman from which we clip this paragraph : It is -a great mistake to argue with the so-called Evangelical Christ ian. T-o convert a Baptist, a Metho dist, a Campbelite or a Mormon you must speak to him of the import ance of salvation. Tell him of the end of man ; the nature of sin ; the justice and mercy of God ; speak to him of heaven and hell; teach him persuade him ; but do not argue with him. Reason did not put him in his present religious frame and reason will not put him out of it. Protestantism is dead, and priests should not lie the last to discover that fact. Not quite so fast brother. Be cause that “ Man of Sin ” “ who op- poseth and exalteth himself above all that is called God,” has been shorn of his power, it does not fol low that Protestantism is either dead or dying. As to the position occupied by those who contend for the restoration of New Testament Christianity, it is true that reason alone did not put them into their “ present religious frame,” but faith in Christ and obedience to His will did ; and it will require something more than the diabolical cunning of Catholiaism to put them out. Yes, in order to get them into this “ re ligious frame ” it is much better to follow the example of the Lord üktî ALD. * ------------ ------- —--------- -------- Jesus, and speak to them of the im there is just as much authority for tion of the difference between portance of salvation ; tell Ahem of the one as for the other; and the Christianity and Infidelity. nrafitirp nf--------- is not nbe.vinorthe R iches .—The desire to become the justice and mercy of God, of command of Christ. rich, even very rich,to own millionsof heaven and hell, teach and persuad How I n —This dollars, is prevalent and rules many them,” etc., rather 4hftft~ try -to frighten them with the seven heads quotation and reply we take from lives.
