The Best Meeting of My Life
Such were the words of a pious
mother, who has two sons, 10 and 12
years old respectively. She said,
“ The rest of the family had retired
for the night, and myself and two
boys were in the sitting room. One
-of them, of his own accord gut a
Testament and read, and then the
other read. Then both sang a
hymn, I joined with them, and each
rose up and made remarks on what
they had read. Then the oldest
prayed; and a better meeting I
never enjoyed.”
This illustrates a practical and
important feature of Christianity.
Its power is not in eloquence or
knowledge alone. These may be
made important auxiliaries, but we
must not consider them the real
powers. They are only means

We may learn several useful
lessons from this. 1. The enjoy
ment or success of a meeting does
not depend on numbers. 2. Nor
on learning. 3. Nor on eloquence
4. Nor on worldly wisdom. 5
Nor on fine music. 6. Nor on fine
house of worship. 7. Nor on con
formity to the world.
✓This much negatively. But the
success of a meeting does, in a
greater or less degree' depend on
1. Simplicity of dress and surround
ings. 2. The absence of any at
tempts at display or entertainment.
3. The sincerity of the participants.
4. The Word was read, and hymns
sung “ from the heart.” 5. The
absence of any thing to detract
from the worship. G. The unfeign
ed love of the one for the other.
This last contributed no little to
the meeting. And this would make
any meeting a happy one. “ Let
brotherly lovo continue.” This Is
the gréât secret of church ^jccess.
May we learn to love in word and
deed, to love one another, as Christ
