W ash LITTLEBABY’S SADEND Seattle, July 31.— Work ou the Lake the tide flats began this morning at 11:80 o ’ clock, when Miss Zoe Semple, daughter of ex-Governor Eugent Sem ple, started the machinery of the dredger Anaconda, stationed at the end of the east waterway. The occasion was one of public rejoicing, and as the sand appeared at the end of the dis charge pipe 2,700 feet away, it was welcomed with cheer«, music by a baud, and noisy blasts from steamboat and factory whistles. Appropriate ex ercises were held ou the dredger, and also at the end of the pipe lino. The enterprise, which is being car ried out by the Seattle & Lake Wash ington Waterway Company with the sta.e, includes the excavation of two waterways in the tidelands of Elliott bay, one mile long and 1,000 feet wide, and of a canal which is an extension of one of them to admit ships to Lake Washington. The lake canal w ill be cut one nnle through tide flats, and two mile i through the upland in which it w ill p eroe ene hill 308 feet, and an- other 141 :cet high. -It w ill be 80 feet wide at the bottom, and 20 feet deep at low tide, and w ill have a lock at the outer end large enough for ocean steamers. The purpose of making the '•anal at this point is to have it directly connected with the present water front facilities of the city, and to secure ma terial for filling in 1,525 acres of tide lands at the head of Elliott bay. The work is expected to occupy five years and to cost (7,000,000, towards which the citizens have raised a sub sidy of (700,000. The capital is fur nished by St. Louis men, headed by Henry Semple Ames and Edgar Ames. TO IN TER FER E. Highest o f all in Leavening Power.— Latest U. S.
