County Treasurer. O l y m f ia , Wash, July l_ L a t e this afternoon Sheriff Mills received a toiephouo message that Convicts Tracy nnd Merrill had been seen at ii&iner, a station a few miles from Tenino on the road to Tooorna. The Sheriff left immediately to join the other members of the posse. The two dogs brought over from Ellens- burg a few days ago will now have their first fai* chance to show what they can do. Heretofore they havo unfortunately been at too great a distance from tho ¡mint where tho convicts’ trail wag discovered. They are right on the ground now and important developments are expect ed. Messages were sent to Tacoma, and a Fierce County posse took the field tonight to Lead off the fugi tives. CARSON GIVES CP. Idealizing that his dogs have bo- come practically useless, Guard Car- son, of Walla Walla, left today for home. There arc however two other hounds here from Ellenaburg, but they do not seem much more efficient than the Walla Walla pups. TACOMA REINFORCEMENTS. Nearly all tho Oregon men have now given up the hunt, but tho posse is receiving daily accessions of strength from tho towns of this part of Washington. A number of Ta- coinans are the latest arrivals, and they are confident of success as they claim to be old hands at the business. A visit to Bohemia at this season of the year cannot but impress the visitor with the unusual amount of activity manifested by the continual roar of pow der blasts heard on every hand developing the various mines. The roads are fairly well opened and both the stage line and freight teams are loaded to their full capa city with men and supplies for the various camps that are already in activity. Altogether the prospects for Bohemia have not been brighter for years. A quick start was made for the locality where the convicts had been seen, and traces were found where tboy had roasted eggs at a fire at the edge o f tho bush, but not a trace of tho convicts themselves could be found The Walla Walla bloodhounds proved to be useless, and would not pick up the trail. T a c o m a , July 1.—Sheriff John Hartman, of Pierce County, left Ta coma this morning to join in the hunt for Tracy and Merrill. He took ono or two men with him, and has arranged for other nun to join him further south, in addition to the five men who left Tacoma with Depu ty Sheriff Johnson yesterday. Depu ty Sheriff Webb, at Wilkeson, and officers in other towns of Pierce County have been reinforced and are guarding public highways and bridges. WAS NOT TRACY.
