    W INTER EGG PRODUCTION.
Winter egg production is not so
serious an affair with the practical
poultryinau as it is with the farmer.
The reason is plain. The pouitry-
ir|au provides well built, warm
houses, mates for egg production,
keep« thoroughbreds only feed such
feeds such foods as is rich in niiro-
gen, avoids overcrowing, and makes
his fowls exercise. The practical
poultry man has generous sizod
houses and never exposes his hens to
inclement weather. With all the
strong argument that can be ad
vanced in favor of free range, the
egg farmer fiuds moro profit in large
runs and scratching shed attach
ments. These sheds are heavily
littered with straw, leaves or any
light material available, and among
this litter grain is scattered. The
fowls work from morning till night
and not only shell out tho eggs in
consequence, but keep in better
health and vigor than when given
free range. Free range during parts
of tho year when grass and bugs
arc blontiful is, with out n question
a picnic for fowls both old mi l
young; but of what benefit is i"
when tho ground is fro/eu, vegeta
tion dead and bugs are as scarce as
liens teeth? Olio might as well sug
gest exercise to the hungry man in
placo of food as to compele tho fowls
to hunt for such a living.
The winter recalls a certain farmer
.who believed in keeping his hens on
tho “ no work no play” plan. Dur
ing warm weather, when the hens
wore laying— anil when it was pos
sible for them to secure all the food
they needed— he
believed
in
giving them a good breakfast and
supper besides. When cold weather
set in, and the liens, owing to the
strain of molting, stopped laying he
lost interest in them and as a punish
ment, stopped their food. “ If they
won’ t lay they are not entitled to
eat. I have no use for an idle man,
beast or bird. Let them hunt for
their living.” Think of thoso poor
hens hunting for somethin" to eat
when the hard frosts out short their
supply!
This is but an illustration of the
reasoning that some farmers use iu
caring, tor their heus.— Poultry
