A T errible A ccjddnt — A terrible
accident occured at the Booth A
Kelly mills at Wendling one day
last week. Mr Carol Jacobson who
was running the gang edger had
the misfortune to get his hand
•caught iu the saw. The third fin
ger was taken off aud the saw fol
lowed up the forearm almost to the
elbow. He was taken to the hospi
tal at Eugene and Drs Kuykendnl
and Paine dressed the wound, taking
out the third finger and all the
bones of the wrist aud about half
the bones of the forearm.
At last
reports he was getting along nicely
end will probably recover the use of
■his baud, though it will never be
strong. The boys in the camp
where the accident occured made
up the sum of $340 and sent along
with him when he was taken to the
hospitnl. We understand that Mr
Booth has offered to put the un
fortunate man through a business
college as soon as he gets able to
atteud.
T he S chool L aw .— The following
is the gist of the school law which
applies to voting at the special
meeting to be held in Cottage Grove
e a the 18th 2o’ clock p in, to wit:
Section 45. “ Any citizen of tbi3
state, male or female who is 21 years
ot age and has resided in the district
30 days immediately preceediug the
meeting or election, and has property
ia the district, as shown by the last
county assessment by the sheriff on
which he or she is liable, or subject
to pay a tax shall be entitled to vote
at any school meeting or election in
slid district. Then follows an ex
planation of what constitute» pro
perty which is to the effect that if
“ he or 6he has stock, shares, or own
ership in any corporation firm or
copartnership, which has property in
the district, as shown by them by
the last county assessment, upon
which said firm or corporation pays
a tax or is liable therefore whether
the same has been assessed or n ot."
they are legal voters. The writer is
informed b the district board that
there is state and county school
m>. iis drawn by this district to
carry on but little over five months
school It appears to be imperative
for the existance of a good school
hare to levy a small tax upon the
property owners. Cottage Grove
has the name of mantaioieg a good
public school and her
present
standard in this regard should not
in our estimation be lowered. No
kind of publio institutions of this
kind can be run without finances. The
rising generation of this school
district will tie the living monuments
to mark the progress of
their
pred ecessors. There
is nothing
loet by spending money to educate
the child; but a great deal baa been
loat for the lack of a good education.
The American school of todav is
the bulwark of American liberty.
