DORENfl
The past week, although averag
ing ebout 5 degrees warmer than
the previous one, was still slightly
cooler thau usual at this season of
the year. Numerous small showers
occured during the fore part of the
week in nearly all parts of the State,
But it closed dry and with an abun
dance of warm sunshine. Light
frosts occured the morning of the
4th in a few elevated regions, but
they did but little damage.
Haying has progressed rapidly,
and much of the crop has been safe
ly secured. In most portions of the
ATillammett valley it is extra heavy,
while in the Coast region and eastern
and southern Oregon it averages less
than usual. Pastures are holding
.out well, except in Coos couuty,
where a shortage is reported, which
will cause some shrinkage in the
milk supply in that section.
The fall grain harvest has begun
in a few places in the Willamette
valley and tho crop is extra promis
ing, while in eastern Oregon the few
Jiot days of the week, following as
they did a
protracted cool and
windy spell, have been unfavorable,
and tbe grain is not filling ns well
as usual, and tho opinion prevails
that in Umatilla and the neighbor
ing countries the crop will be some
what short of former expectations.
T he hessian fiv is reported to have
done seme damage to fall wheat
near Days Creek in Douglas county,
but no complaints regarding this
pest have been received from any
othor section of the State. Spring
wheat, oats, barley and hops are
everywhere doing nicely. Corn has
improved and late • potatoes
are
making good advancement- Sugar
i>eets in Union county have also
mode good growth and tbe corn crop
promises well.
Cherries, blackberries and rasp
berries are ripe. Tho cheery crop is
lighter than usual, hut raspberries
und blackberries are plentiful.
