change to cooler weather occurred months visit at this place.
Saturday iu all parts of the State,
and since theu it 1ms continued cool,
with frequeut small showers in the
Willamette valley,the Coast district
and Southern Oregon, and with con
siderable cloudiness, hut no rain,
in Eastern Oregon and tho Colum
bia river valley nbove the Dalles.
The rains in southern Oregon will
prove especially
beneficial,
as
droughty conditions have prevailed
in that district Muring the last few
weeks, but in the Willamette valley
and Const region they are not need
ed and will damage considerable cut
clover and still further delay tho
growth of corn and beans, which
now noed warm sunshiny weather.
Fall wheat is ripening nicely and
even that reported damaged bv
frosts is recovering and will yield
better than formerly expected. Iu
tho Willamette valley the wheat
crop is generally in good condition
and remarkably freo from insect
pests. There is some complaint of
its heading short and of the heads
being small, but these complaints
are not general. Iu Southern Ore
gon tho wheat crop will bo below
the average on
account of dry
weather. W inter oats aro Loading
nicely, and fall barley is raedy to cut
in Southern
Oregon. Corn and
gardens, although showing improve
ments, aro still backward. Hops
are making a good growth and us
yet have not boon damaged to any
noteworthy extent by lice. The
cutting of clover hay is well advanced
and the first crop of alfalfa lias been
.pretty much all cut and securod.
Potatoes are doing "well, Pasturage
continues abundant and stock is in
excellent condition. In Coos county
cutworms have again made their
appearance, and largo quantities
of their eggs are to be found on
the underside of fence-rails and in
similar places They have not yet
done much damage, but farmers are
apprehensive that they will later.
