boat had fallen in with a passing
ship before tho storm of yesterday,

perished. The time had been too
short to permit of his reaching land.

reasoning would solve the
problem; she must wait for news.
But fancy tilled the place of fact and
as sho walked, her mind was bus)
with visions. She would see a great
ship gliding toward the boat, ltopes
were let down nud all were safety
brought to tho deck. Then she
would see tho storm sweep down
and a great wave would riso and
dash tho little craft to pieces. With
such fancies would mingle pictures
of tho boat alone on the wide sen
with no sail in sight, and the despair
ing men facing hunger nud horrible
thirst. She saw indeed all the
dangers, and one small hope.
With her mind in such n tumult,
she at length reached the little house
in w hich sho had passed so mnuy
days happily. Li Kean sat in the
door way and started back in terror
at tho figure in its strange dress, the
uniform of the Toylini. The sound
of tho familiar voice however, quickly
reassured her and tho venerable fa
ther had been summoned tho sad
story was told and tears were shed
Sho Mai offered such consolation as
she could from heavy heart, and the
thought of her own miraculous es
cape helped to inspire hope. It was
evident that nothing could be done.
Li Khi would send tidings of his
safety at the earliest possiblo op
portunity.
Seeing tho grief in the little house
hold, Sho Mai would have remained
with her fi iends to comfort them
but to this they would not consent.
That sho should sacrifice tho com
petition needlessly was not to be
thought of. Tho old philosopher
would listen to no refusal, and from
his scanty savings ho provided her
with w hat was needed for her jour
ney. She accepted his kindness,
knowing that her father would re
quite him a hundredfold.
A ship railed from Teng Chow
tho noxt day end iu it Sho Mai began
her voyago anew. Capricious for
tune smiled nt last, and favoring
winds filled the sails every day. The
junk hod never mndo so quick a
passage and the captain to whom
Sho Mai had confided her anxiety
for haste said that the Cods wero on
her side and that tho prizo she
sought would he liors.
Despite the oxcitemcut and the
hardships of the past few days ami
ibo fears which filled her mind, Sho
Mai felt that she had never been so
well fitted for the great task. Tho
weariness of her body passed away
with the rest she found on tho voy
age, for the free life of the pastyeur
had given her strength and health.
Then tho strange experience of that
year had taught her lessons and had
developed of her mind as no mere
study of books could have douo.
The joy of her love for Li Khi,
tempered by the sorrow their separ
ation from him, were forces to
strougthcu tier powers.
So she ennie at length to Peking
narrowly in time, vet nqt too late.
The great day of competition dawn
ed, nud she took her place among
tho fo rty thousand scholurs w ho by
winning the Chiu Shi degree had
qualified themselves for this final
struggle. She fouud no trace of 1 i
Khi, aud yet he might be there for
in that multitude their meeting was
but a chance.
In the remarkable hall of the
Han Lin Yuen Foo the scholars
gathered. Its thousands of narrow
cell liko rooms devoid of doors nnd
built in rows upon rows like the
balconies of a theater, face a great
area. Long narrow galleries provide
passages by which tho cells may be
reached. Each aspirant for honors
is assigned a coll in order that nil
communications may be cut off. In
tho grand arena sits the Chung
Yuen Foo of tho royal family, sur
rounded by scores of secrrtnries,
The subject upon which tho com
petitors are to work is written iu
large letters nnd hung up iu a
coniqiicuous place w here it can be
seen from every cell. A sharp rap
from a mace in the hand of one of
tho assistants brings a bush like that
of dcuth upon the assemblage. The
great competition has begun.
Many a heart beat widly with ex
citement as a task was begun. Many
a brilliant mind was defeated by its
own eagerness which unfitted it for
tho long lubor of the battle. Among
all those who strove for this high
honor it is doubtful if there was one
whose calmness equaled that of Sho
Mai. Tho thrilling scenes through
which sho had passed so far from
unsettling her nerves, hud left her in
a state of quiescence, which nothing
could disturb. She felt that all her
faculties bad never been more per
fectly under her control. 1‘erhaps
I ho despair regarding Li Khi w hich
had gradually crept iuto her heart
accounted in some measuro for her
mental state, for who has not known
that strange awakening of the mind
after a great disaster comparable
only to what the soul may feel when
it awakens after death.
The subject chosen was one to
which sho had given her deepest
thought. She would have chosen no
otlior. Slio worked with a steadiness
which was unshaken by any sensa
tion of fatiguo though hours came
and went and still the tusk was un
completed. Even after slio herself
laid down her brush satisfied that
the best of w hich she was capable
had been done the work of many
others was still unfinished. Three
days and nights passed befor the
announcement was mndo that tho
last manuscript was done.
Then a small army of pages
gathered up tho work from each cell
and took it the hundreds of secre
taries for reading. This work is
done with great speed though with
scrupulous care. Each secretary
reserves tho best manuscript and
these are sent to tho imperial places
where the final choice is mado by
the Emperor himself assisted by tlie
Chung A’ uen Foo.
Meanwhile the competitors were
dismissed and they poured out of
the great hall. Again did Sho Mai
scan the faces of all who eamc under
her observation, but without finding
Li Khi among them. Tho disap
pointment was maddening although
he had not known until
that
moment tlint a hope remained to
make disappoint!! out possible. Sbe
was dazed by the failure of all her
