Iu a recent report to the State De partment at Washington, says the New York Times, W. Ii. llollowuy, United States Consul General at St. Peters burg, gives the following interesting particulars concerning the remarkuble salt mines of Uetzk, Russia: “ Uetzk is a small settlement of §lx- ty-two kilometers (38.5 miles) from Orenburg, iu tue region of the K irgiz steppes. Cossacks of the Ural and Im migrants from old Moscovia estab lished this settlement iu the middle of the seventeenth century, when the rich stratum, containing from 70,000,000 10 80.000.000 poods (1,120,000,000 to 1.300.- 000.000 tons) of excellent mineral salt, covering an area of four square versts (1.75 square miles), was discovered. The depth of the mines has recently been ascertained to exceed ninety sagenes (G30 feet). “ In the beginning of the sixteenth ceutary Bashkirs worked this layer Iu a primitive way. ThtTHusslan govern- auent took possession of it In 1753. In 1810 the government built the Oreu- burg-Samara salt track, and from 1817 a regular exploration of the mine has been carried on. tirst by convicts and since 1849 by free workmen. “ At present a company of Orenburg merchants holds these rich mines on lease from the government, but the work is not extensive. The yearly pro duction does not exceed 1,500,000 poods (24.389 tons), because of the lack of good roads—the place having been inaccessible—but now that a branch of the railway of Orenburg-Tashkent leads to the mine it is expected that the export will be largely increased. "The salt is now worked by one enormous pit—a sort of cavern—at a depth of fifty-seven sagenes (399 feet) underground. This excavation meas ures 112 sagenes (784 feet) in length, twelve sagenes (eighty-four feet) iu breadth and twenty-five sagenes (175 feet) in height The walls are quite white. The ceiling is of a cylindric form and has a thickness of thirty sagenes (210 feet). A sand layer ten to fifteen sagenes (seventy to 105 feet) thick covers the mineral stratum, and* absorbing the dampuess, protects the vein of pure crystallic salt The cav ern is lighted by several electric lamps. "Eighty workmen are occupied in this cavern. Some trace new lines for work, others make canals in the direc tion marked, and when these reach the points indicated by the engineer the bed is blasted with gunpowder in the same manner as is used for blasting stone. " A steam elevator serves for com munication with the surface of the earth and for the carrying o f salt. There is also a wooden screw stair case (485 steps), with platforms for rest. Owing to the salt walls, the wood of the stairs remains In good condition, and in course of time hard ens more and more. Iron parts, on the contrary, rust very soon. Dynamos and steam engines are placed In special buildings on tbe surface and serve not only for the lift but also for the mill Wi ch mechanically assorts the salt. "Since the construction of the rail way the excavation of four other cav erns of the same dimensions has been planned.” Sure C u re lo r Dyspepsia. Undoubtedly for sound, healthful sleep the best position ia to lie en the rlgjit side. It Is a curious fact, how ever. to roll over on the left aide Is quite a relief in case of indigestion. Let us suppose a person has gone to bed. lie is either lying on bis right side or ou his back. He feels a cer tain amount of fullness in the stomach ami perhaps distress. I f he is in the habit of taking a dope he thinks at once of his dope. Some stomachic or perhaps a cup of hot water or maybe a hot sling is thought of. Instead of doing any of these things if be will just simply roll over on his left side he will be surprised how quickly belching of wind will occur and almost complete relief from tbe distress. The explanation Is that lying ou the left side crowds tbe stomach. This lessens the capacity of the stomach and forces the gas up through the eso phagus. This will frequently bring much relief. A more natural and last- lug relief than any drug could have done. Try it the next time you have any of the throee of Indigestion after go ing to bed. Lie on the left side for fifteen or twenty minutes and see if It does not disappear. It la a very ef fective remedy. It Is a remedy that tbe osteopaths would especially ap prove of. as It is of a mechanical na ture and applied directly to the dis ease. After the gas has been all forced out of tbe stomach In this way tbe sleeper can generally roll over on bis back or right aide and go to sleep. It la said that Mark Twain recom mended this remedy aa well-nigh Infal lible. But whether he does or not, ex perience has taught us Its value.— Med ical Talk._____________________ ' (Successors to John Poole) Foot of Morrison Street, Portland.
