(1799-1888). an English Quaker lady,
who wrote excellent stories and verse
for children and translated Fredrika
Bremer's novels and Ilans Christian
Andersen's tales. She and her hus­
band, W illiam Ilow itt. were so con­
genial, collaborating In literary work,
that their friends called them William
and Mary and maintained that they
had been crowned together like tlieir
royal prototypes. Mr H ow itt died in
1879. and in 1887 Mrs. Howitt, being
in poor health, went to spend the win­
ter at Rome and died there Jan. 30.
