J. H. Shortridge and Amelia S. Adams were married March 16, 1863, at Jefferson, Linn coun ty, Oregon, and soon thereafter came to Cottage Grove and locat ed on a donation land claim, six miles south o f this city, where they resided about 54 years, and reared a family, having came to Cottage Grove six years ago to reside and spend their declin ing years. Mrs. Shortridge was the first white woman to set foot upon the prairies o f the Coast Fork valley. Mr. Shortridge was born in La Fayette, Tippacanoe county, In diana, July 18, 1831, and crossed the plains to Oregon in what was known as the “ Miller Train” in 1851, driving three yoke o f oxen. The company left Mercer county, Illinois, March 13, 1851, and ar rived in Marion county, Oregon, on August 18, 1851, making what was then considered a quick trip, lacking three days o f being five months on the road. Mrs. Shortridge was bom in Vermillion county, Indiana, Feb. 12, 1835. She crossed the plains from Iowa in 1852 with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Frank lin Adams, who settled near Sa lem. However, the crowning event o f the day was the sumptuous anniversary dinner, the table fairly groaning under its great load o f both substantial and dain ty courses too numerous to men tion. At this notable celebration and reunion Sunday, all o f the chil dren and grand children were present for the first time in nine years, hence the occasion was a most pleasant and enjoyable one. The day was spent in recounting pleasant incidents o f the past and young and old alike will long remember tnis happy occasion. The following children were present: Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Harris, o f Eugene; Mrs. Olive Lacey, o f Portland; F. B. Short ridge, o f Booth, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Weeden, o f Cottage Grove. The grandchildren present were: Dr. and Mrs. M. C. Har ris, Mr. and Mrs. R. Claude Gray, George Harris, Audrey Langdon, o f Eugene; Mr. and Mrs. O. S. Spear, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Langdon, Arlie Langdon, Evart, Eva, Dale and Gordon Weeden, o f Cottage Grove; Mrs. S. J. Dillard, a niece, o f Eugene. The Leader heartily congratu lates Mr. and Mrs. Shortridge and wishes them many hap py returns o f the day. We wish also to thank them for a bountiful supply o f deli cious “ wedding” cake.
