THEY RILLED THE GIRL.
Kathleen Sheehan, ngini twenty-three,
killed herself because her mutes mini-

that only ignorance could have failed
to e toll and admire.
T h i girl had a tender heart, the mo

id and very sensitive.
At a dressmaker’s where she iirst

•he left the place.
She engaged at a department store,
where again laughter greeted her ut
terance. and the rude teasing wounded
her sj irit. She labored hard to correct
her English pronunciation, but the
Limerick tongue would not twist easi
ly.
Going to another shop, she endured
similar treatment and was In despair.
Her face grew sad, and she brooded.
One day she told her rulu lives she hud
taken a life Insurance |*olley.
“Why?” they asked.
“I might die,” she said, with a far
away look. "The money would be for
you.”
On her last Sunday the poor child
dressed herself in her best clothes and
went to a park. Here she stayed all
day and all the nigiit following. She
was debating the awful query, “To he
or not to be?”
What must have been the torture to
the distrait mind and the sensitive
soul?
Monday morning at dawn she went
to a clump of hushes and swallowed
cftrbollc acid. A policeman found her
writhing on the grass. And in the am
bulance on the way to the hospital she
gasped:
“They’ll never make fuu of me
again ”
And then she died.
No, lassie, they never will make fun
of you again. And bitterly sorrowful
must they be to know they hounded
you unwittingly to destruction.
You see, there’s more than one way
to kill u poor girl!
And, Kuthleeu, in the kinder land to
which you have gone your limping
mother tongue will trouble you no
more. There will bo no rough sylla
bles to pronounce. Where you have
gone there is only one language spoken
—a language used all too seldom here.
It Is the language of love.
Moral?
Be careful lest you hurt some sensi

What to you may seem a trivial Jest
may prove In the heart of the easily
affected a festering wound.

THE WASTE OF HATE.
“How I hate that man!**
“But,” said I —
“You cannot afford to hate any one.
Hate Is expensive.”
Which is true. Hate consumes vital
force. It dissipates energy. And it
profits nothing.
If you hate some one you will show
It. And thus you put it into the pow
er of the one vou hate to make you
miserable. Why hand over to your
dearest foe a whip which he may use
to scourge you?
The late Paul Morton, president of
one of the big insurance companies,
when asked if lie did not like to "get
even” with persons who had wronged
him replied:
“I haven’t time to get even. 1 am
too busy.”
Which Is philosophical. As we say
on the street, the l>est thing to do in
such a mutter Is to “forget It.” Life
Is too short to pursue |>eople for the
sake of revenge.
Moreover—
lit order to "get even” you must
lower yourself to the level of him you
seek to punish, which means that you
shall add to the bitterness of your
hatred the loss of your self respect.
If you eaiinst do better you at least
can say:
ffcorn to bo scorned by one
Whom 1 scorn—
Is that n mutter to cause regret?
Is that a matter to make mo fret?
In other words, if you caunot frame
a better philosophy “consider the
source.**
Better still -
Live on a plaue where distress can
not come to you bemuse of the hatred
of any man.
Lincoln was the best abused and
most thoroughly bated muu of his gen
oration, but Emerson says of him:
“Ilis heart was as lurge ns the
world, and yet it hod no room in it
for the memory of a wrong."
He lived ou the heights.
To thus live high above a II iietty
grutlx«- oml llttl«" iiiiinin.itlt"< is to
live lu mi Atmosphere of "m alk t to
ward none nml eliarlty for nil."
Can't live up there?
Well, It la miller hlith living for
most of us We may *>'l up at times,
but Ihe nlr of that alllttule is too rare-
fled for our unaeelimated souls.
Rut
?Ve cannot afford to live down ou
the swamp level of passionate dis
likes and personal hatreds.
Mental
«hills and fever prevail la the miasma
of that level.
If we cannot live ou the heights let
us at leust abide ou the hillside,
where we ntay learn to coasc to bate—
