The Berger, Bean Hardware Co. have purchased the building form erly owned by R. L. Kichey, lo cated on the corner of W all and River streets. We do not know their intentions, hut it is rumored that they may construct a sub stantial business block 011 tliis lot. W e are just informed that they have sent on a line of New Home Sewing Machines and have a man to look after that end o f the busi ness. The Berger-Beati Hardware Co. was incorporated about three years ago and since that time have made marvelous growth in their business. They now have the finest Hard ware, Vehicle and Implement store in this part of the state. They are located in the new I. O. O. F. five story building in Eugene. The Cottage Grove property just secured by this firm is located at the west end of the Main street bridge where the Lorane-Silk Creek and Coast Fork-Pass Creek wagon roads fork and is sure to become a prominent and excellent business corner. Consideration not given out. . A Unique Firearm. Hardy Crow, an esteemed pio neer citizen of l/traue valley, pre sented the Leader witli an ancient and unique firearm Thursday and one which must have been consid ered very convenient and effective ill its day. John Crow, the father of Hardy Crow, was oue of the sturdy pioneers who crossed the plains to Oregon from the Missouri valley in 1852. The Elder Crow was a blacksmith and gunsmith by trade and before leaving Van Bur- en county, Iowa, for Oregon, de signed and manufactured a fire arm of his own with which to dis patch wild beasts aud hostile In dians on the trip if necessary. A Kentucky rifle barrel was accord ingly cut down to 12 inches in length. This was inserted in a solid pistol frame aud instead of a cylinder, which was unknown in those days, a sliding block was used instead. This block contains four chambers which carries a good charge of powder and a navy ball, and is arranged so that the four shots could he fired in rapid succession by the sliding of the block either to the right or left. The rear sight is also used as the release spring for sliding the block and the trigger guard also serves as main spring, the hammer l*iu g underneath the frame and just in front of the trigger. It is the cap- and-ball model and is neat in workmanship and perfect iu its action even to this day, demon strating the fact fully that the Elder Crow was a very ingenious and practical workman and me chauie.
