SPECIAL RECEIVED A COOL RECEPTION AT ROSEBURG SATURDAY Special Train Pulled into the Station Unheralded and Unnoticed— Delegation Unattended with Lane county in a systematic and vigorous campaign to defeat said bill. Nearly all tliosf? present express ed their views on the matter and there was sentiment against the “ Nesmith" scheme. Methods of combating the measure were also discussed to some ekteut. The Drain delegation seemed to favor the idea that it would he best to map out aunther county overlapp ing the proposed “ Nesmith” coun ty borders and by submitting such a proposition to the voters of the state both would be carried and thereby each defeat the other aud no division would be the ultimate result. Other delegates viewed the matter otherwise and opposed any division at all. The following resolution presented by the Rose burg delegation, was adopted: In the moruiug meeting of the few Douglas delegates there was anything but harmony, it beiug definitely develo|>ed that the Drain delegation was anxious to take advantage of any opportunity to dissect old Douglas aud form a coynty of their own with Draiu as the county seat. Therefore the entire morning was occupied iu discussing this complicated turu of affairs between Draiu and Rose burg delegates. Mr. Benton Myers, of Drain, objected to the above resolution beiug passed, as did most all of the delegates from Drain. He wanted it so amended that the sentence “ opposed to any division of Douglas couutv at this time,” be stricken out. Ile fav-, ored leaving the matter open so that if necessary the Nesmith di vision could be fought by the crea tion of another county, and if there was to be a county at all let it be on lines more favorably drawn to the jieople of this section, es|>ecially the north end. Mr. Fd- wards and Mr. Cool, both of Draiu, did not favor the resolution, but urged the amendment. These gentlemen were of the opinion that the fight would be more successful if made on two-county basis and favored this line of procedure. would be brought to a harmoni ous ending, and that all would get together to defeat the Nesmith di vision. Representative J . A. Buchanan and Attorney George Neuner were of the opinrtiu that the proposed uew county should be fought sin gle handed, all force being directed at the Cottage Grove proposition. Finally after the entire morning session was taken up by the dis cussion of the proposefi amend ment, Chairman Coshow put the amended resolutions to a vote and it was lost. On being placed be fore the assembly in its original form it carried by a mere majority Afternoon Session, The afternoon session was ad joumed to the court house where assembled the Fugeue delegation and lass than fifty Roseburg and Douglas county citizens, the court room being about two- thirdsfilled. After several fruitless attemps on the part of F.ugene to arouse en thusiasm by giving their yell, “ Rain or shine old Lane aud Douglas will never change their boundary lines.” the convention settled down to business. Chair man Coshow, of the Douglas coun ty delegation, opened the session by a brief talk ou the divisiou question. Nominations for perma nent chairmau were asked for. J . A. Buchanan nominated 11 o u . J . M. Williams, of Fugeue. Mr. Williams declined, and suggested C. S. Williams, the chairmau of the Lane county delegation. He in turu, declined, and suggested that as this was a Douglas county meeting, held in the Douglas coun ty court house, a Douglas man should be the chairmau. He nom inated Hon. O. P. Coshow, who was unanimously elected. Geo. Neuner, J r ., was chosen secretary in like manner. At this time the Lane county delegation brought forward a wooden mallet, about 18 inches long, 8 inches square having a three foot handle aud was labeled, “ If you can’t bqqst, then knock,” This was given them wheu their train passed through Cottage Grove, wheu the “ Nesmith” pro* moters dubbed them knockers. It was suggested by Judge Wauacott that all of the editors of Douglas county be named as a committee to aid the chairman in weildiflg this mallet. C. S. Williams sug gested that all the editors of the state be added to this committee aud this was adopted. Chairmau Coshow believed this mallet aud the power back of it amply able to knock “ Nesmith county” clear off the earth. Mr. Williams proposed to paint the mallet black aud «take it "Nesmith’s fqneral plub," Mr. R. J . Frasier, of Rugene, moved that a committee of five on resolutions be appointed, which motion was later amended bv Sen- Industries. V O L . XXI. Fugene sent a special train carrying something like ISO citizens, some of whom were out in earnest to knock the proposed Nesmith countv, while many others simply took advantage of an opportunity to enjoy a day’s recreation and see the county seat town of a sister county, with its new paved streets and other im provements.
