Seattle, W ash.. |u n e 13.—T he
Suprem e Court of the I ’uited S tates
believes th a t the states of Oregon
and W ashington should get to
g e th e r and settle their boundary
dispute along the Columbia River,
■without going into court. 'I'llIs
opinion is expressed in deuyiug
the petition of W ashington for a
rehearing. T he controversy con
cerns jurisdiction over inconsider
able islands, w hich are valuable
only for the fishing grounds su r
rounding them. As a result of d is
puted jurisdiction there have been
frequent conflicts between the a u
thorities of both states iti the a d
m inistration of their respective
laws. T he Supreme Court holds
th at Oregon retains control over
these islands. In closing the dis
pute reference is m ade to a receut
act of Congress, designed " to e n
able the states of Mississippi and
ArkauNgs to agree upon a bound
ary line and to determ ine the ju ris
diction of crimes com m itted ow die
Mississippi river and adjacent ter
rito ry .’’ T h e court suggests that
( iregon an d W ashington m ight be
governed bv this act, an d appoint
com m issioners to agree ou a bound
ary line to avert future conflicts.
