Mayor B. R. Job called the house to order, stated the object of the meeting and called for nomina tions for a chairman and a secre tary, which resulted in the selec tion of Hon. R. M. Mr. Veatch addressed the meeting briefly stating that “ this is an im portant procedure in any town, but more so iu Cottage ('.rove as it is just passing from the country v il lage class to that of a real live city and that at no far distant date it is destined to become a flourishing county seat, (loud cheers) there fore 1 counsel the selection o f the very best aiul most competent men of this municipality to administer its future affairs." Mr. Veatch stated that the municipal water plant had proven a profitable in vestment to the city and had be come a regular source of revenue to the city. He therefore favored the municipal ownership of the electric light plant and expressed himself as opposed to the free granting of franchises and would not personally support any man for mayor or other city office who favored the granting of free fran chises. At this juncture lie called for nominations for mayor. NOMINATIONS FOR MAYOR Dr. B. R. Job, the present in cumbent, was placed in nomina tion by Jos. Porter. J. F. Spray was nominated by H. (). Regardless of Mr. Jones lieiug an eleventh hour candidate for the nomination for mayor lie run Dr. Job such a close race that his name will also lie placed at the head of the ticket for the April election that he may lie given a fair show in the contest. The vote resulted Job 100, Jones 96, scatter ing 2. Job was .declared the regular nominee. EAKIN FOR TREASURER. Tw o names were presented for treasurer, the present incumbent Herbert Eakiu aud A. If. King, the vote resulting, Eakiu 124, King 42, scattering 3. VAN DENBURG FOR RECORDER For recorder loe Young was nominated by Jas. Forter and Chas. Van Den burg was nominated by C. F. Walker. The vote re sulted Young 66, Van Denburg, 133. WARDS NOMINATED COUNCILMEN At this juncture the three separate wards were requested to assemble in different parts of the hall and proceed to vote for couucilmeu. In ward one there was quite a spirited contest result ing in the selection of W . A. Hogate for the nominee. In ward two it was a walk-over for Gi. L. Rees, his being the only name presented, he was therefore made the unanimous choice of that ward. ATTEM PT T<1 STUFF BALLOT Iu ward three was a sharp con test between Van Allison and B. K. Lawson, Mr. Spray withdraw ing his name early in the proceed ings. The balloting finally re sulted in the selection of Capt, Lawson for councilman, hut not until after a most brazen and bold attempt had lieen made by some miscreant or heeler to stuff the ballot box. Attorney Medley one ot the teller», discovered in canvassing the ballot, that a pack of small cards had been thrown into the box which had lieen cut on a printing office paper cutter and were still stuck together on the edges. These cards all Imre the same name and were written in a ladies hand write. This ballot was declared a fraud and another ballot was taken. Re garding tliishiazeii act the Leader will say that those fraudulent votes or cards were not cut iu the leader office, nor did they come Irom the Western Oregon office. So the reader is left to draw his own conclusions. There arc peo ple who will find out to their sorrow one o f these days that such corrupt methods and vile politics will not lie tolerated in Cottage Grove, CONCENSUS OF OPINION ON THE SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION. A canvass of prominent mem bers of the legislature, outside of Multnomah county, regarding the special session called for Monday morning discloses; The session should be confined to one day. The errors iu bills should lie corrected. No new legislation should be in augurated. ( )n these three points the lnem- liers are of almost one mind. Blit there are two other matters which some members favor. These are: Action on the vetoes of Gover nor Chamberlain. Provision for the normal schools until the end of the school term. That the normal school question will come up is a certainty. Rep resentatives B. F. Jones of Polk and Lincoln favors an appropria tion to carry on the work at the schools to the end o f the school year, and Representative Hal I). Patton of Marion is of the same mind. Senator J. E. Hedges of Clackamas, fears that there is a probability of a full special session of three weeks, although opposed to such. The matter of vetoes will also cause dissension. Chamlierluin, liefore resigning as Governor, vetoed more than a half-hundred Hats bills which had passed House and Senate. Governor Beuson be lieves that these vetoes should be submitted at the next regular ses sion of the legislature aud not at the special session. There are members o f the legislature, how ever, who had pet bills vetoed by Chamberlain, and they want these taken up by the legislature, believ ing that they can have them passed over the veto. Senator Bingham had a bill which was given the veto, and lie wants to save it. His case is similar to that of other members. On the other hand, there is a disposition to confine the work of the s|iecial session to remedying errors made in enrolling bills and then return home. It is believed that there are enough members who will stand pat to confine the labors of the special session to the specific purixisc for which Gover nor Beuson issued the call, correct ing a few errors. Speaker Mc Arthur has prepared copies of the bills which need correction and everything is in readiness for formal action in order that there will be no delay. Lace curtaiu sale Eriday and Saturday.
