Col. Hofer has not announced his
candidacy it is stated that he has
given delegations that have called
on him, to understand that lie is
in a receptive mood and will run
if given assurance that there is
sufficient demand for him to make
the race.
Col. Hofer for several years has
been one o f the leaders o f the
Roosevelt republicans in Oregon.
While some of the old time loaders
of the party have been fighting

In the whole range of farce
comedy is there anything funnier
than the recent history of the Ore
gon laud fraud prosecutions? The
ludicrous gravity with which the
play has been carried forward and
the frequent admonitions to the
public not to laugh, as everything
was l>eing said and done in serious
earnest, have contributed greatly
to the enjoyment of the farce.
Observe the synopsis:
Act 1. Ileney gets tired— very,
very tired of his job. Hopeless of
securing more convictions, he has

tious.
Act 11. Bristol makes the com
ical blunder of supposing that he
is really to prosecute the land
grabbers. Dismay at San Fran
cisco. Consternation at W ashing
ton. Sudden disappearance of
evidence in government’s posses
sion on which indictments were
based.
A ct III. Bristol declared to be
neglecting his duty. Off with his
head. Enter his successor with
loud blare o f trumpets. No more
quarter for land grabbers, no de
lays.
A ct IV. (O ne year later). Re
maining laud fraud cases dis
missed while the public isn’t look
ing.
Act V. Senator Fulton, who
had been denounced by Ileney for
four years as the king pin of the
land grafters, suddenly restored to
favor and rewarded with life job
as federal judge at $6000 per.
Tumult o f applause from sleuths,
laud grabbers, etc. Ileney smiles
conspicuous in the background.

The performance has been re
plcte with entertaining situations
and rich in humor. The climax
in the last act when Fulton be
comes judge is particularly divert
ing. The play terminates with
Ileney still retained as the govern
ment’s assistant counsel at a large
salary, although the land fraud
indictments have been dismissed.

I take this subject to appeal to
the farmers in this most solely
neglected part o f oue of our great
est resources of wealth.
'The bulk of the poultry comes
from the farm and not the fancier:
but the best poultry comes from
the fancier or small farmer. Some
of the most miserable looking
stuff it is, too. No wonder the
first thing a packer does is to take
off the feathers, for in no other
way could they fie graded, no two
alike, o f every color and shape
and size, more like crows than
chickens. Some say, why do we
get such poor stuff from the fine
farms? Farmers say we pay no
attention to our hens; that is so,
and they never pay auything for
them, either. Where they came
from no oue knows, but they were
traded arouud and got the start
and now they are in the last notch
o f degeneracy. Some spring they
nearly all die off with the cholera.
It is not cholera, it is weakness
from excessive inbreeding aud
neglect. You do not inbreed
your hogs and cattle, or your corn
or wheat, why the poultry?
In passing a neighbor's place
that is a little more up-to-date than
your own aud you see his flock of
fowls all just alike, don’t you turn
and look and drive a little slower
to take a good look at them and
wish you could swap eggs with
him? Now, just close to the road
is a fine lien with fifteen chickens
all just alike. Oh! how fine to
look upon, compared with yours of
every known color and shape.
Pure-breds look alike all the
time, and for that reason bring
from oue to two cents and often
much more, per pound. I have
seen scrubs turned down at less
than the market when a bunch of
full bloods brought 2 cents above.

money-makers. All wild birds
lay from two eggs to fifteen and

chickens are nearly wild. You
figure on your hogs, cattle and
grain, but never on your poultry.
Why? One farmer said because
he was ashamed to: he never let
